Columbia Pictures is giving the 1983 action thriller "Blue Thunder" a 21st-century update, replacing the state-of-the-art helicopter of the title with"the world's most advanced drone.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Marvel Studios executive Craig Kyle ("Wolverine and the X-Men," "Thor: Ragnarok") will write the screenplay, with Dana Brunetti ("Fifty Shades of Grey") producing.

Directed by John Badham ("Saturday Night Fever," "WarGames"), the original film starred Roy Scheider as an LAPD helicopter pilot selected to fly the tricked-out Blue Thunder, intended for use in surveillance and against potential large-scale disobedience during the Olympics.

A box-office hit, "Blue Thunder" inspired a short-lived television series as well as a video game.
