COMIC LEGEND:

Marvel gave the use of Blue Marvel for an anniversary edition of Sujfan Stevens' Illinois.

STATUS:

True

As I just noted in the previous Comic Book Legends Revealed, Illinois was a 2005 concept album by Sufjan Stevens where all the songs on the album had some connection to the state of, well, Illinois.

It was a really good album and drew many plaudits when it was released. However, Stevens' record label, Asthmatic Kitty, figured that it was probably a mistake to have Superman on the cover of the album when Superman is, of course, a trademarked character. DC was really cool about it and let them sell the copies that they already printed, but just to have the Superman figure removed for future versions of the album.

That takes us to 2015, when Asthmatic Kitty decided to do a tenth anniversary edition of the album.

This time around, though, rather than go with balloons or a blank space in the sky, they decided to use Blue Marvel, from Marvel Comics!

I just recently did a Look Back on Adam: The Legend of Blue Marvel, the miniseries from 2008-2009 that introduced Blue Marvel to the Marvel Universe (courtesy of Kevin Grevioux, Mat Broome, Sean Parsons and Alvaro Lopez).

Interestingly, Blue Marvel (Adam Brashear) is actually FROM Chicago in the comics! So he totally fits into the theme of the cover!

So Asthmatic Kitty had album cover artist, Divya Srinivasan, add Blue Marvel to the cover.

Here's what they had to say at the time:

While we do love balloons, we’ve always missed the imminent presence Big Blue brought to the album’s cover art, short-lived though it was. But things are very different in 2015 than they were in 2005, and different times call for different heroes.

So today, exactly ten years after we released the double LP of Illinois, we’re proud to announce a special 10th anniversary edition of the LP that includes Chicago-born Blue Marvel on the cover.

The double LP will include an “Antimatter Blue” and “Cape White” vinyl colors. The audio for the special edition comes from a 2014 remastered version of Illinois. We commissioned children’s book artist and the original Illinois cover artist Divya Srinivasan to portray Blue Marvel in the style of the original art. We’re pressing 10,000 double LPs of this edition. And we might include an extra surprise so stay tuned.

Big thanks to everyone at Marvel for giving us permission to feature Blue Marvel.

As noted, they even did special blue and white colored vinyl in the release...

How awesome is that?
