Fans Love Blue Lock's Unusual Take on a Team Sport

Blue Lock is a sports anime focusing on solo competition rather than teamwork. The original manga, written by Muneyuki Kaneshiro and illustrated by Yosuke Nomura, began its serialization in August 2018 and is still ongoing. Eight Bit, a studio known for creating The Irregular at Magic High School, Tokyo Ravens, Encouragement of Climb: Next Summit and That Time I Got Reincarnated As a Slime, produces the anime. The first season was well received by audiences and critics, with the focus on selfish playing and ego setting it apart from the typical team-centric shows of the anime sports genre.

The series follows a young man named Yoichi Isagi who has dreams of becoming a professional soccer player. He soon finds himself invited to compete in a controversial experiment known as Blue Lock, masterminded by the madman Jinpachi Ego. This training system locks a large pool of young soccer players in an advanced facility and pits them in a high-stakes competition with only one winner, with the goal of creating the world's best striker. Anyone who fails will find their dreams crushed, as they're banned from ever playing for the Japanese national team.

Blue Lock is available to stream on Crunchyroll in Japanese, English, German, French, Spanish and Portuguese.
