DC Studios has finally released the first official trailer for Blue Beetle.

The trailer provides fans with their first look at Jamie Reyes and his extra-terrestrial armor in action. The titular character, played by Xolo Maridueña, is a snarky youth who is handed a Big Belly Burger box containing a Scarab that bestows upon him incredible powers. While the initial transformation scene is staged as horrific, the video also presents the upsides to bonding with alien technology as Jamie takes flight into low orbit and transforms his limbs into different weapons. Kord Industries also plays a significant role in the promotional material; Victoria Kord comments that while the Scarab may have chosen its host, it still belongs to her. Diehard DC fans will recognize Ted Kord's Blue Beetle Bug make an appearance although it's currently unknown if he appears in the film.

While there has been more than one Blue Beetle in the comic book DC Universe, the upcoming film will see Cobra Kai actor Xolo Maridueña step into the armored blue suit of Jaime Reyes. Created by Keith Giffen, John Rogers and Cully Hamner in 2006's Infinite Crisis #6, Jaime is a teenager who becomes a superhero after an alien device, the Scarab, infuses itself onto his back. Jaime is the third Blue Beetle following Dan Garrett and Ted Kord, and his armor grants him a number of weapons and abilities, including flight and more, all courtesy of the Scarab.

Blue Beetle's Friends, Family and Enemies

Aside from Blue Beetle's official poster and promotional artwork, other official looks at the film have been scarce before the new trailer, and leaked images have been taken down. In addition to Maridueña, the cast of Blue Beetle includes the likes of comedian George Lopez and What We Do in the Shadows star Harvey Guillen, the project set to be the first major Latino-led superhero movie. Mayans M.C. star Raoul Max Trujillo and actor Susan Sarandon will portray the film's villains, Conrad Carapax/Carapax the Indescrutible Man and Victoria Kord, respectively. While the former is a robot villain, Victoria Kord is a military industry mogul created specifically for the movie, and her possible connection to Blue Beetle Ted Kord remains to be seen.

Blue Beetle is one of four films from the live-action DC Universe releasing in 2023. It is preceded by the recently released Shazam! Fury of the Gods and The Flash movie, which is out in June, while Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom does not come out until December.

DC Studios is now run by co-CEOs James Gunn and Peter Safran, who have mapped out a multi-year plan for the DCU. Its first slate titled "Chapter 1 - Gods and Monsters," some of the revamped DCU's projects were announced at the end of Jan. 2023, Gunn discussing them in a video. The DC boss said that The Flash will reboot the pre-existing cinematic universe that began with 2013's Man of Steel, adding that the later-scheduled Blue Beetle is "a fantastic film about a kid who's a marvelous part of the DCU."

Blue Beetle flies into theaters on Aug. 18, 2023.
