The first images of Cobra Kai star Xolo Maridueña wearing the Blue Beetle costume for DC's upcoming film have emerged online.Just Jared Jr. posted a series of set photos showing Maridueña donning a comics-accurate costume for Blue Beetle. Maridueña will play Jamie Reyes in the upcoming film, scheduled to arrive in theaters in Aug. 2023, and the photos show him both with and without the Blue Beetle helmet. The costume comes off as remarkably similar to his comics' counterpart, with the character first appearing in 2006's Infinite Crisis #3 as Reyes and in Infinite Crisis #5 as Blue Beetle.RELATED: George Lopez Boards DC's Blue Beetle Movie

Maridueña previously discussed wearing the Blue Beetle costume earlier this year. "We've done two suit fittings," he said. "They're hoping that I get more buff by the time we actually start filming. But I've seen the suit, and it looks awesome." On working on the film, Maridueña added, "[Blue Beetle's] gonna be important, not only for Latinos and to see people of color, brown people, represented onscreen, but also show a story that we haven't really seen before."

Directed by Angel Manuel Soto and written by Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer, Blue Beetle was announced by DC in November 2018. "It is an honor to direct Blue Beetle, the first Latino superhero film for DC," Soto previously stated. "I want to sincerely thank everyone at Warner Bros. and DC for trusting me to bring Jaime Reyes to life. I can't wait to make history together." Along with Maridueña, the film will also star Susan Sarandon and Raoul Max Trujillo as villains Victoria Kord and Conrad Carapax/ Carapax the Indestructible Man. Recent reports suggested Ted Lasso's Jason Sudeikis would also play a major role in the film; however, Sudeikis's casting has since been reportedly debunked.

Created by Keith Giffen, John Rogers, and Cully Hamner, Reyes is the third character to take on the Blue Beetle mantle in DC Comics continuity following Dan Garrett and Ted Kord. He becomes the hero by bonding with an alien scarab that gives him a powerful exosuit with numerous superpowers, including superstrength, flight and more. Blue Beetle frequently teams up with his best friend Booster Gold, a powerful hero from the future, in numerous storylines and has also been a member of the Teen Titans and Justice League.

Blue Beetle is scheduled to hit theaters Aug. 18, 2023.
