A new report suggests that a series based on Blue Beetle may be in development at HBO Max.According to Daniel Richtman, the streaming service is developing a series based on the DC Comics character. Back in 2010, then-DC Entertainment Chief Creative Officer Geoff Johns tweeted, "BLUE BEETLE NEWS from DCE!! We have a live-action test of Jaime Reyes' scarab activating his suit. It. Is. Awesome." While some thought this was referring to an independent series, the character only ended up appearing as a sidekick on Smallville.

On the animated side of the business, Blue Beetle has appeared in Batman: The Brave and the Bold, Young Justice, DC Superhero Girls and Justice League Action.

Blue Beetle could also be making his way to the big screen. Back in 2o18, reports started circulating that a film centered around the young hero was in development for the DCEU with a script from Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer. However, there have been no updates since then.

Introduced during 2006's Infinite Crisis, and created by writers Keith Giffen and John Rogers and artist Cully Hamnerthe, the Jaime Reyes incarnation of the Blue Beetle quickly developed a devoted fan following. The character has a wide range of superpowers thanks to an alien scarab embedded in his body.

While Reyes is the most recent iteration of the character, the second Blue Beetle, Ted Kord, brought the hero into the spotlight. Created by Steve Ditko, Kord made his debut in Captain Atom #83. It is unclear which version of the hero the series would follow.

If the series moves forward, it would be the third DC Comics drama to come from HBO Max. The streaming service is currently developing series based on Green Lantern and Strange Adventures.
