DC shared the first look at the titular hero's suit for its upcoming Blue Beetle film.

Shared during 2021's DC FanDome event, the concept art offers the first look at the suit that will appear in DC's upcoming Blue Beetle film, showcasing the hero's electric blue suit against a city background, with one of the skyscrapers emblazoned with a Kord Industries sign, a nod to one of the original Blue Beetles, Ted Kord, who first appeared in DC Comics in 1966. The art was presented during a panel with Blue Beetle director Angel Manuel Soto, screenwriter Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer, and Xolo Maridueña who will star in the film as Jaime Reyes/Blue Beetle.

"The thing that I love most about comic book series is you see different versions of suits, like, you see the metal version, you see the flying suit version and this and that, and I'm just so excited with each superhero movie, you have to one-up each other," Maridueña, who is known for his role as Miguel on Netflix's Cobra Kai series, said during the panel. "So, I know for a fact that any of the other superheroes out there would think they have the best superhero suit. I'm calling you out for a rap battle. We got the best suit over here at Blue Beetle. And I haven't even seen it, that's how confident I am."

Maridueña's casting as Blue Beetle was announced in August during the premiere of James Gunn's The Suicide Squad. The Blue Beetle film was announced in November 2018, with Dunnet-Alcocer joining as the writer for a story focused on Reyes, the modern version of the hero. In February of this year, Soto, who previously directed Charm City King, boarded the movie. "It is an honor to direct Blue Beetle, the first Latino superhero film for DC," Soto said at the time. "I want to sincerely thank everyone at Warner Bros. and DC for trusting me to bring Jaime Reyes to life. I can't wait to make history together."

There have been three versions of Blue Beetle in the comics and the film will follow Reyes, who debuted in 2006's Infinite Crisis #3 and took up the mantle two issues later. Created by Keith Giffen, John Rogers, and Cully Hamner, Reyes finds the Scarab, one of the most powerful pieces of technology in the universe, which granted the original Blue Beetle his powers. It outfits him with an alien exosuit that grants him numerous abilities, including flight, enhanced strength, and weapon and energy generation.

With production expected to begin in the fall, Blue Beetle does not yet have a release date but will premiere exclusively on HBO Max upon its release.
