The DC Universe has recently undergone a massive internal shakeup, with James Gunn and Peter Safran taking over as the new heads of the franchise. As part of some of their first moves, Henry Cavill was no longer considered for movies, while Wonder Woman 3 and a Batman Beyond film were canceled. These changes served as a foundation for speculation and concerns over the future of the franchise but also offered a chance for consistency with a focus on DC's most iconic heroes.

While many films have been lost in the shakeup, one hero has soldiered on above the rest, Blue Beetle. However, this iteration isn't focusing on the original Blue Beetle, Ted Kord. Instead, the film shines a light on Jaime Reyes, the most recent and even more powerful iteration of the hero. But with his presence in the DCU still prominent, there's a chance he could remain in the main continuity. If so, it could mean an even brighter future for the hero and include an iconic team-up with Booster Gold.

Blue Beetle Has a Lot of Potential in the DCU

Blue Beetle is one of the DCU's smaller heroes and, as a result, has far fewer eyes on his development. But this could be seen as an opportunity for growth, being that Reyes is a new hero and a character with a legacy. Because of this, there's a chance he could operate as a new superpowered hero tied to the Blue Beetle before him, Kord, who could teach him the ropes. Furthermore, Reyes could also use the help to understand the Blue Beetle Scarab attached to his back. But with powers that allow him to keep up with stronger heroes, he can still make his way to the big leagues without worry.

Reyes' story puts him in a position to be both a cosmic and street-level hero as the Scarab's ties to space put him at risk of facing stronger enemies while his life as a teenager forces him to try and live a normal life while helping innocents. However, with a greater legacy tied to him, there's also the added aspect of Kord's past enemies coming for a new Blue Beetle. That said, with Reyes' story pulling him in so many directions, his life would be on a collision course with none other than Booster Gold.

Blue Beetle and Booster Gold Have Waited Long Enough to Team Up

Booster Gold grins sardonically at the reader

In the comics, Booster Gold's an unlucky guy from the 25th century who decided to travel to the past and act as a superhero in hopes of turning his life around. But he found that to be much harder than he anticipated and inadvertently became a hero of the past. However, his most iconic ties come from his friendship with Kord, and the duo has become a staple for friendship in comics for decades. As a result, there could be a fun and long-anticipated story in seeing Booster Gold and the new Blue Beetle team up.

Since Reyes and Booster Gold aren't as close as Ted, it would be fun to see a new pairing with the same names, especially if Kord sanctions it. For example, Booster Gold could be both a mentor and feel inferior to the new hero with powers and a conviction far more intense than his own. Essentially, where Booster Gold cares about having fun and saving lives, the Scarab is more serious and ready to do what's necessary. Yet, over time, the two could begin to work together, and the mentor and trainee could be more like equals. Even better, the themes could be switched, with Booster representing past friendships and Reyes serving as a reminder of a promising future. In the end, Blue Beetle is the perfect opportunity to bring an iconic friendship to the big screen and expand the new DCU in a fun way.
