Shudder released a new trailer for the animated anthology film, The Spine of Night.

The film's trailer sees Richard E. Grant as The Guardian introducing the audience to the Sacred Bloom, a flower that can give "unspeakable power" to people who know how to harness it. What follows is a collection of tales on wizards and warriors, conquerors and killers, brimming with lovingly hand-drawn blood and guts. The film is presented in a retro rotoscoped style -- a form of animation where cartoonists trace cels over live-action footage frame by frame -- that invokes artists like Ralph Bakshi and Frank Frazetta and movies like Fire and Ice and Heavy Metal. Some of the actors joining Grant on these gruesome adventures include Lucy Lawless, Patton Oswalt, Betty Gabriel and Joe Manganiello.

The Spine of Night premiered earlier this year at the SXSW film festival, which was reviewed by CBR's own Reuben Baron who said, "Despite the intriguing aspects of its worldbuilding and narrative construction, The Spine of Night is more or less a style-over-substance film. How you feel about it will depend on both your fondness for the style it's imitating and on how much you can tolerate the inconsistencies in its execution."

The film stars Grant as The Guardian, who recently appeared as the breakout character "Classic Loki," who was one of several Variants of the Marvel Cinematic Universe's God of Mischief that appeared in the Disney+ series, Loki.

The film is written and directed by Philip Gelatt and Morgan Galen King and animated by Gorgonaut Studios. The synopsis for The Spine of Night reads as follows:

In The Spine of Night, an ultra-violent fantasy epic, ancient dark magic falls into sinister hands and unleashes ages of suffering onto mankind. A group of heroes from different eras and cultures must band together in order to defeat it at all costs.

The Spine of Night will release in theaters and on streaming on Oct. 29.
