Bleach is a hit shonen series starring a huge cast of unforgettable anime characters, ranging from the sword-slinging protagonist Ichigo Kurosaki to his friends in Karakura Town and all manner of Soul Reapers, villains, and more. Some of those Bleach characters are beloved for their kind and caring personalities, such as Orihime Inoue, but others are the total opposite.

Certain Bleach characters have nasty and hostile personalities that make them unpopular or evil in the eyes of anime fans, and they might be mean-spirited or downright sadistic at times. In general, a mean character is one who abuses the people around them, often verbally, and they like to put others down over and over. This describes plenty of Bleach characters.

10 Ichigo Kurosaki Has His Dark Side

Being the shonen protagonist doesn't mean a character will have a perfect personality. In fact, it's better to give these heroes personal flaws to balance things out and give them something to work on, and such is the case for Ichigo Kurosaki. There's a lot to like about him, but he can also be surprisingly mean.

Ichigo is a short-tempered tsundere who is quick to snap at people or even hit them, such as Ganju Shiba, and he will rarely apologize for it. He might also mock or demean strangers or minor villains whom he meets, and thus he tends to make a bad first impression.

9 Jinta Hanakari Is On His Worst Behavior

Jinta is surprised in Bleach.

Jinta Hanakari is a minor character who lives in Karakura Town, and he is often seen helping out at Kisuke Urahara's shop alongside Ururu Tsumigiya. Jinta isn't a very nice kid, and he tends to harass Ururu and treat her badly while they are working together. Ururu never tries to defend herself, either.

So, it falls to Tessai to keep Jinta in line, and Jinta has learned to fear Tessai's wrath. From time to time, Jinta has been helpful as a pint-sized hero, but overall, his personality leaves plenty to be desired, and even Rukia commented on it in Bleach's first season.

8 Sentaro Kotsubaki Yells At People

Sentaro from Bleach yelling

Sentaro Kotsubaki can be ranked among the worst Soul Reapers for a few distinct reasons. To begin with, this loudmouthed officer contributes next to nothing to the plot, and he has a petty and obnoxious personality to match. All that can also be said about his rival and peer, Kiyone Kotetsu.

Sentaro is even meaner than Kiyone, though, since he tends to yell even more and will intimidate people on purpose, something Kiyone doesn't typically do. Sentaro also fussed at Hanataro Yamada, who doesn't even belong to the same squad as him. Such a jerk.

7 Yammy Llargo Loves To Crush His Foes

Yammy Llargo is the massive 10th Espada and one of the tallest Bleach characters of all. Yammy appeared alongside Ulquiorra early in the Arrancar arc as a bizarre invader who had no mercy on anyone, even Tatsuki or Orihime. Yammy enjoys squishing his enemies with his bare hands, rarely drawing his zanpakuto in battle.

Yammy also tends to insult or annoy his allies and enemies alike, such as when he called Wonderweiss a "freak" and pummeled Loly and Menoly when they got in his way. He also tried to crush Rukia until help finally arrived, and he lost to Byakuya and Kenpachi in the end.

6 Jirobo Ikkanzaka Often Targets Innocent Women In Battle

The 4th seated officer of squad 7 is nothing like his gentle giant commander, Captain Sajin Komamura. Instead of being an honorable warrior, Jirobo is a total thug who made a terrible impression in the Soul Society story arc when he went up against Uryu Ishida and Orihime Inoue.

The mean, honorless Jirobo verbally abused his opponents a great deal, and he even tried attacking Orihime. He openly criticizes women in battle and will do anything to put them down, which is inexcusable in any Soul Reaper squad. Not even squad 11's brutish warriors talk like that.

5 Barragan Luisenbarn Puts Down Everyone Else

The 2nd Espada, Barragan Luisenbarn, fancies himself the master of time and death, and he even has a skeletal grim reaper true form to match. He enjoys bossing his minions around but has no compassion for them, and he will even call them fools if they lose to their enemies.

In combat, Barragan wastes no opportunity to taunt, intimidate and talk down to his opponents, even high-ranking Soul Reapers. He can break anyone's spirits with his harsh words and terrifying powers, and he clearly enjoys it all. He even died cursing Aizen out of sheer spite.

4 Ulquiorra Schiffer Is Stone-Cold

The 4th Espada, Ulquiorra Schiffer, often uses cruel words to apply psychological damage to his opponents, and he personally enjoys it. Or at least, he is eager to doubt everyone else's worldview and force his nihilistic ways on them, as was the case with his captive, Orihime Inoue.

Ulquiorra once reduced Orihime to tears with his hurtful words about the apparent futility of friendship and hope, and later, he threatened to tear Orihime's heart out of her chest and see it for himself. In the end, though, he changed his mind, and Orihime actually missed him.

3 Hiyori Sarugaki Is A Total Brat

Hiyori Sarugaki is one of the eight Visoreds, or exiled Soul Reapers with the power of Hollow masks. Hiyori is a hero who fought hard to help everyone defeat Sosuke Aizen, but she was never nice about it. In fact, Hiyori has been an obnoxious brat ever since her introduction in the Arrancar arc.

Hiyori is a hot-tempered tsundere who tends to yell at or even hit people for the pettiest of reasons, and other Bleach characters can't stand her. She was even passive-aggressive with Chad and Orihime when she met them. In her Soul Reaper days a century ago, Hiyori often feuded with a young Mayuri Kurotsuchi, constantly picking fights with him.

2 Loly Aivirrne Tormented Orihime

Loly Aivirrne is a low-ranked Arrancar with token combat abilities with her centipede-themed zanpakuto. She is best known for her petty but intense dislike for Orihime, whom she views as a love rival for the affection of Sosuke Aizen. Loly is a mean character who isn't afraid to take down other girls who show her up.

Loly and her friend Menoly cornered Orihime in her room and beat her half to death, and Loly even wanted to tear off Orihime's fingernails. Later, Loly ambushed Orihime once again and started to tear up her clothes until other characters intervened. Loly just can't leave Orihime alone.

1 Nnoitora Gilga Always Fights Dirty

Nnoitora smugly laughing in Bleach.

The 5th Espada, Nnoitora Gilga, is somehow even meaner and nastier than the sharp-tongued Ulquiorra or the thuggish Yammy. Nnoitora has no honor as a villain, and he is liable to form petty grudges and go to extreme lengths to win, just like Loly. But he went even further than Loly did.

Nnoitora hated Nelliel for the pettiest of reasons and antagonized her nonstop until he injured and betrayed her one fateful day. Later, Nnoitora mocked his fellow Espada Tier Halibel and tormented Ichigo soon after the battle with Grimmjow. Nnoitora even mocked the defeated Grimmjow and tried to kill him until Ichigo, of all people, intervened.
