Summary

  • Protagonist Ichigo Kurosaki's lineage in Bleach reveals his unique spiritual gifts and connections to various clans.
  • Ichigo's father, Isshin, is a Shinigami and reveals his true nature to Ichigo during a climactic battle.
  • Ichigo's mother, Masaki, was a pure-blooded Quincy, and her Quincy blood is passed on to Ichigo, making him part-Quincy and explaining his instinctive use of Quincy techniques in battle.

Bleach is one of many Shonen action anime where the protagonist's lineage provides substantial insight into not just their heritage, but the story's broader lore and sometimes even its combat system. In Bleach's case, protagonist Ichigo Kurosaki has inherited practically everything this world has to offer, though he has no idea about it in the beginning.

Ichigo once thought himself a relatively normal boy who can somehow see ghosts and other similar entities, but his spiritual gifts come from both sides of the family. Ichigo's father Isshin and his late mother Masaki have each contributed to their son's spiritual growth. Ichigo's family tree is even larger than he had once imagined, and it nearly included the Ishida family as well.

Updated on September 21, 2023, by Ajay Aravind: By their very nature, Shonen protagonists have a customized place in their respective narratives. Some of them have overpowered ancestors, like Yu Yu Hakusho's Yusuke Urameshi, whereas others have unique abilities like Attack on Titan's Eren Yeager. Bleach's Ichigo Kurosaki is no exception to the rule. Although Ichigo's ancestors are only revealed in bits and pieces — starting with his father's Shinigami history and ending with his mother's Quincy legacy — there's no doubt that Ichigo is extremely special. As such, any discussion of Ichigo's powers must necessarily include his unusual lineage.

Ichigo's Shinigami Ancestry, Explained

Isshin explains their family history to Ichigo

Ichigo Kurosaki had both parents around for some of his childhood. However, during the main events of Bleach, only his widower father remained — and Isshin had more than a few secrets to share with his son. Isshin is a Shinigami (or Soul Reaper), something not even Bleach fans knew until he donned his old robes and slew the Arrancar Grand Fisher. That said, Isshin only went after this Hollow because it was responsible for his wife's untimely demise.

In any case, Isshin's Shinigami status is what helped Ichigo manifest his own Zanpakuto after Rukia lent him her powers at the story's beginning. Isshin finally revealed his true nature to Ichigo right before the climactic battle against Aizen, where he helped his son learn a technique called Jinzen. But Isshin is no ordinary Shinigami-turned-family man. He was born into the Shiba family, a minor noble clan in Soul Society, and once served in Squad 10 as Captain Isshin Shiba. T

his is most relevant to Ichigo because it means that the siblings Kukaku, Ganju, and most of all, the late Kaien Shiba are all members of Ichigo's family. They are specifically his cousins, which explains why the late Kaien physically resembled Ichigo in flashbacks. It also explains why both Ichigo and Kaien both subscribe to the concept of an intangible "heart" that links two people, a phenomenon that helped give Orihime hope that Ichigo would rescue her in Las Noches. On a more amusing note, this family connection might explain why Kukaku and Ganju both share Ichigo's fierce temper, including the latter two clashing repeatedly in the "Soul Society" arc. It's just how this family functions.

Ichigo's Quincy Ancestry

Ichigo's maternal lineage is even more impactful in the story of Bleach, and Isshin doesn't explain all this to his son until partway through the Thousand-Year Blood War arc. The late Masaki Kurosaki was once a pure-blooded Quincy, an Echt Quincy, and notably, she was once arranged to marry Ryuken Ishida to keep the shrinking pool of pure-blood Quincy alive. If that had happened, Ichigo's friendly rival Ishida Uryu might never have been born, and Masaki and Ryuken's child would have been a pure Quincy from the very start. Instead, Ryuken Ishida went on to marry a gemischt Quincy named Kanae Katagiri and had Uryu with her. In spirit, Ichigo and Uryu are almost family.

What actually happened is that Masaki leaped into action when she saw Isshin being beaten up by a mysterious Hollow. She managed to destroy the creature with a point-blank attack, but it had already poisoned her bloodstream with its exotic toxins at that point. Urahara explained that the only way to reverse Masaki's fate would be for Isshin to sacrifice his Shinigami status and remain tethered to the living world along with Masaki.

Isshin and Masaki soon fell in love, got married, and had three children together. When Masaki was pregnant with her first child, Ichigo, her Quincy blood was passed on to the fetus, and Ichigo was born part-Quincy without even knowing it. This is why the Quincy king Yhwach once referred to Ichigo as "my son lost in the darkness." It also explains why Ichigo can instinctively use the Blut Vene Quincy technique in battle.

The Origins of Ichigo's Inner Hollow

Ichigo and Aizen cross swords in a mountainous area

Aizen has made several iconic declarations throughout his time as a villain in Bleach, but his statements about Ichigo have always been the most intriguing. During their fight, Aizen praised Ichigo's growth: "since the moment of your birth, you have been special." He then attempted to clarify his assertion by adding that Ichigo was "the offspring of a Shinigami and a..." — but the final word was drowned out by Isshin's sudden arrival. Most viewers suspected that Aizen was going to say Quincy, a hypothesis that was later proven true.

In fact, the Hollow that attacked Masaki and left its toxins in her blood was originally created by Aizen. Known as White, its essence was somehow retransfigured into Ichigo's Zanpakuto spirit, making Zangetsu his Inner Hollow. This was one of the biggest twists of the Thousand-Year Blood War arc, as it showed that the mysterious bearded individual masquerading as Zangetsu was none other than Ichigo's Quincy spirit. Ichigo eventually realized that he needed both the Hollow and the Quincy as they're equal parts of him, which is why he ended up with two Zangetsus. All things considered, Aizen was also involved, albeit indirectly and unconsciously, in the complex mosaic that is Ichigo Kurosaki's family tree.
