The Bleach shonen franchise largely bases its combat system on zanpakuto or soul-cutting swords, leading to all kinds of exciting sword duels in the story. But there is also the kido combat system, based on magic spells and creative thinking. Soul Reapers who use kido are a bit like wizards.

Kisuke Urahara is a noted kido master, and he also has a mind of science that allows him to crack any mystery. Still, many magic users in the world of anime could rival Kisuke and give him a serious challenge. "Wizard" can be literal or describe anyone who uses clever and supernatural abilities to get the job done, and Kisuke is in good company.

10 Sosuke Aizen, The Traitor Captain (Bleach)

Aizen Smirking In Bleach Anime

In Kisuke's own universe, there are many powerful kido practitioners and experts, from Byakuya Kuchiki to Hachigen Ushoda. Then there is the matter of Sosuke Aizen, the traitor Captain. He knows a thing or two about kido, too.

In the story, Aizen relies more on his shikai, Kyoka Suigetsu, and the Hogyoku to fight. But in a kido-only duel, Aizen could still rival Kisuke and trade evenly with him and really make Kisuke sweat.

9 Merlin, The Curious Holy Knight (The Seven Deadly Sins)

Merlin from seven deadly sins

Meliodas commands a squad of seven holy knights known as the Seven Deadly Sins, and the most clever of them is Merlin, a woman with a fierce mind hungry for new knowledge. Hence, she is the in of gluttony.

In any fight, Merlin can shut down or confuse Meliodas' enemies with her huge variety of magic spells, and Merlin can even trap people inside nigh-unbreakable magic cubes. Kisuke must stay on his toes if he ever clashes with this magical holy knight.

8 Itachi Uchiha, The Tragic Shinobi (Naruto)

Itachi Uchiha Injured in Naruto

If Kisuke knows what he's getting into, then he can survive a proper duel with Itachi Uchiha and get a chance to retreat safely if he's backed to the wall. Kisuke is more than clever enough to avoid Itachi's Tsukuyomi technique, at least.

Itachi can be loosely categorized as an anime wizard since he doesn't typically use melee attacks or swords, instead favoring advanced genjutsu and ninjutsu in battle. Kisuke will need all his scientific prowess and kido mastery for this one.

7 Yoshikage Kira, The Explosive Serial Killer (JoJo's Bizarre Adventure)

Anime JoJo's Bizarre Adventure Yoshikage Kira Killer Queen Stand

The Stand user known as Yoshikage Kira is one of several explosion-oriented anime characters, rarely using weapons or physical attacks. That makes him a wizard of sorts, sharply contrasting with Jotaro Kujo and his punch-based Star Platinum.

Kira isn't a scientist like Kisuke, but his explosive powers are formidable, including the remote Stand called Sudden Heart Attack, and Kira has a slippery and clever mind that's allowed him to escape capture thus far.

6 Wiz, The Charming Shop Owner (Konosuba)

konosuba wiz

Despite her charming appearance and personality, the magical woman known as Wiz is actually a terrifying lich lord, one of the most powerful supernatural beings in this entire isekai world. Good thing she is such a gentle person. Otherwise, Kazuma would be in big trouble.

Wiz doesn't like to fight, but if the fight comes to her, then Wiz can use anything from large-scale ice magic to life-draining spells, like a true undead overlord. Kisuke will have his hands full with this one.

5 Cana Alberona, Who Has a Full Deck (Fairy Tail)

cana alberona fairy tail

Strictly speaking, almost every character in this shonen series is a wizard, though many of them use their magic merely to augment their swordplay or martial arts. One of the more conventional magic users is Cana Alberona of the Fairy Tail guild.

Cana brings a stacked deck of magical cards into battle, and she can summon offensive elemental magic from many of them. Besides, Cana can distract her enemies with illusions of beautiful women, and she can even use the Fairy Glitter technique.

4 Van Hohenheim, The Wandering Sage Of Gold (Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood)

Hohenheim from fullmetal alchemist

In this fantasy shonen series, alchemy dominates the combat system, where alchemists can break down and rearrange matter with supernatural means, even on a molecular level. No one does it better than Van Hohenheim, the wanderer.

He's no ordinary man. Van Hohenheim is centuries old and acts as a living Philosopher's Stone, meaning he can perform highly advanced alchemy without transmutation circles or even striking a pose. Kisuke is in for a real fight, even if Hohenheim never goes for the kill (he's a bit of a pacifist).

3 Ranga, The Star Wolf (That Time I Got Reincarnated As A Slime)

Ranga Happy to See Children

Ranga is more powerful than he looks. In the show, Ranga often acts as Rimuru's personal transport and bodyguard, but this dire wolf can use various offensive spells in a fight.

At the very least, Ranga can use magic to summon more wolves, and they could give Ranga cover while fighting Kisuke. Then, Ranga can wield powerful wind and lightning-based attacks against his enemy, which are all devastating.

2 Nine, The Next All For One (My Hero Academia)

Anime My Hero Academia Nine

The symbol of evil was All For One until he lost to All Might and got incarcerated at Tartarus. However, his Quirk was copied and put into Nine, who can now wield several Quirks in combat at once.

With a handful of mighty Quirks at his command, such as laser beams and weather control, Nine took on nearly all of class 1-A himself, meaning he could easily pose a threat to someone like Kisuke as well. He's an entire villain squad in one.

1 Sasori Of The Red Sand (Naruto)

Naruto: Shippūden's Sasori of the Red Sand

Many advanced ninjutsu can make for a proper wizard in this series, and Sasori, a member of the Akatsuki organization, is a "summoner" type wizard. He doesn't shoot fireballs or lightning; instead, he let his puppets do all the fighting.

Sasori stays back as his deadly puppets overwhelm the opposition with blades, sharp wires, poison gas, explosives, and more, not to mention the iron sand jutsu of the Third Kazekage's puppet. Kisuke had better stay on his toes.
