Spiritual swords called zanpakuto are the norm in the shonen series Bleach, and all Soul Reapers, strong and modest, carry them. A zanpakuto can be released to show its true form and abilities, such as Rukia Kuchiki's Sode, no Shirayuki making ice or Momo Hinamori's Tobiume creating fire. Captain Kenpachi Zaraki, meanwhile, has no patience for tricks or traps. He's brute-force Soul Reaper all the way.

Kenpachi is a tough, burly Soul Reaper who loves the thrill of battle, and he wields a ragged zanpakuto whose shikai, Nozarashi, is a blunt battle ax designed to smash the enemy with brute force. Other anime power, abilities, and weapons would also suit Kenpachi well, while others would be an odd fit. It's time to see what powers Kenpachi should wield in battle, which aren't his style.

10 SHOULD HAVE: Sunshine (The Seven Deadly Sins)

Escanor using his Sunshine ability

The mighty warrior Escanor is the brute force member of the Seven Deadly Sins, being a huge, tough guy with bone-crushing strength. But Escanor is not always at 100%; his strength is based on the sun and moon cycle, and at night, he's skinny and powerless, like Bruce Banner vs his Hulk form.

But when the sun rises, Escanor becomes the strongest man in the land, and when the sun hits noon, Escanor is strong enough to rival the Ten Commandments. Kenpachi wouldn't mind trying this power out and becoming a blazing sun warrior for noon duels.

9 SHOULDN'T HAVE: Genjutsu (Naruto)

genjutsu naruto

Genjutsu is one of the three main branches of shinobi technique. Unlike the martial arts emphasis of taijutsu, genjutsu is all about illusions and warping or controlling the opponent's mind and senses. Genjutsu often takes the form of visual and auditory illusions, hypnosis, mind control and more.

Such subtle arts work well for characters like Itachi Uchiha and Ino Yamanaka, but Kenpachi wouldn't have the mental finesse or patience to train and create illusions. Worse yet, illusions don't involve the clash of blade vs blade, ruining the fun of battle.

8 SHOULD HAVE: Star Platinum (JoJo's Bizarre Adventure)

Jotaro posing with Star Platinum

Many different Stands exist in the Stardust Crusaders story arc and beyond, and some of them are geared for up-front combat while others are better suited for support roles or even non-c0mbat roles. Star Platinum is a mighty melee Stand, wielded by the stoic and fearless Jotaro Kujo.

Jotaro isn't bloodthirsty like Kenpachi, but he is a brutal fighter who can make the most of Star Platinum's incredible melee prowess. If Kenpachi could get just one Stand, he'd choose Star Platinum, and pummel all enemy Stand users into a pulp.

7 SHOULDN'T HAVE: La Lujuriosa (Bleach)

szayelaporro grantz bleach

The Bleach universe counts too, and Kepnachi has many zanpakuto to choose from, some of which will be very familiar to him. He might like a melee type such as Kokujo Tengen Myo'o, but he would have difficulty wielding the Arrancar zanpakuto known as La Lujuriosa.

This is the zanpakuto of 8th Espada Szayelaporro Grantz, which uses non-lethal means to subdue its enemies. It can create clones of Szayelaporro's enemies, or make voodoo dolls of them and crush their ligaments and organs to torture them to death. But for Kenpachi, a direct clash is the most fun, and torturing a helpless foe is nonsense in his eyes. Where's the challenge?

6 SHOULD HAVE: The Ultimate Eye (Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood)

wrath ultimate eye

Most of the seven homunculi have an Ultimate body part, and the bloodthirsty Wrath has the Ultimate Eye. It's a bit like the Sharingan, allowing the user to clearly see an enemy's attack patterns and predict their movements. The Ultimat Eye is never taken by surprise.

RELATED: Bleach: Kenpachi's 5 Greatest Strengths (& His 5 Big Weaknesses)

Kenpachi, who loves to fight swordsman vs swordsman, could definitely use the Ultimate Eye to get the edge on the few opponents who can stand up to them, read their attacks and deliver an effective counter. Kenpachi would be sparing with its use, though, to prolong the fight a bit.

5 SHOULDN'T HAVE: Somnabulist Quirk (My Hero Academia)

Midnight from My Hero Academia using her quirk

Like shikai and bankai, Quirks can vary widely, where some are melee oriented, and others are more like magic or function as support for other heroes. Kenpachi would enjoy using One For All, but he would not like using the Quirk of Midnight, the R-rated hero.

Midnight is good at what she does: capturing enemies bloodlessly by putting them to sleep with her Quirk, which emits vapors from her bare skin. Putting enemies down without a fight is the exact opposite of what Kenpachi wants to do.

4 SHOULD HAVE: Kakuja Kagune (Tokyo Ghoul)

ken kaneki using his kakuja

Ghouls all have the ability to create a kagune, or a fleshy appendage that can serve as a biological weapon in combat (and some kagune have more than one appendage). The anti-hero Ken Kaneki has a kagune with four tentacles, but he later ate enough ghoul flesh as a cannibal to unlock a kakuja kagune.

This massively drives up the ghoul's power and speed, and they can grow many giant limbs and become an unstoppable monster. If Kenpachi were a ghoul, the chaotic, awesome power of a kakuja kagune would serve him well, and he could take on all comers.

3 SHOULDN'T HAVE: Airbending (Avatar: The Last Airbender)

Jinora with her tattoos in The Legend of Korra

The four classical Greek elements make up the magic system of this universe, and airbending requires a user to have a flexible mindset and an agile, light fighting style. Unlike the heavy rocks of earthbending, airbending is elegant and intangible, and it is based on driving away foes and self-defense, rather than causing serious injury (usually).

The anarchist Zaheer indeed found a way to weaponize airbending, but as a whole, Kenpachi has the totally wrong mindset for this bending art, and he wants something that can draw blood. And airbending cannot do that.

2 SHOULD HAVE: Iron Dragon Slayer Magic (Fairy Tail)

gajeel redfox talking Fairy Tail

Dragon slayers are rare, powerful wizards in the land of Fiore, and one of them is the Iron Dragon slayer, Gajeel Redfox. Like Kenpachi, Gajeel loves a good fight, and he relies on brute strength to win. His particular brand of magic can really help, since it's based on metal.

Gajeel can turn his skin hard like iron or steel, creating natural brass knuckles and protecting him from return fire. He can also create large iron rods that can strike the enemy from a distance, in case melee attacks won't work. Either way, Kenpachi would have a lot of fun with this power.

1 SHOULDN'T HAVE: Shield Hero Status (The Rising Of The Shield Hero)

naofumi shield

The kingdom of Melromarc needs the four Cardinal Heroes to save the day, and each of them has a different kind of equipment: sword, bow, spear, and shield. The protagonist, Naofumi Iwatani, ended up as the shield hero, meaning he's a backup character for everyone else.

This is a humble and essential duty, but Kenpachi would hate it. He doesn't mind a good defense, but lacking the ability to strike back against the enemy would frustrate him to no end. The shield hero can't even pick up weapons, let alone use them effectively.
