Bleach: 10 Things You Didn't Know About Sajin Komamura

Tite Kubo's smash-hit action anime series Bleach features a diverse cast of characters, from the humans like Ichigo and Uryu and Chad to Soul Reapers such as Rukia, Renji, and Byakuya Kuchiki. Don't forget scene-stealer villains such as Grimmjow and Ulquiorra, among others.

In Bleach, some enemies become allies, and sometimes, friends turn on each other in shocking betrayal. The Captains of the Gotei 13 are Ichigo's enemies at first, but they later become his allies in the battle against Aizen's hollow army. One of them is Sajin Komamura, Captain of Squad 7. He's a huge, friendly man with a wolf head and an impressive Bankai. Here are some facts even fans may not have known about this curious character!

10 He has a human form

Although the anime never reached the arc covering the Soul Society's battle against the Wandenreich, Sajin Komamura shows a surprising ability in this leg of the manga. Desperate to defeat the Sternritters and avenge Head Captain Yamamoto, Sajin visits one of his giant wolf ancestors and embraces the unique power to remove his heart and assume a temporary human form!

With it, he clashes with Sternrittr "E" Bambietta Basterbine once again, and with a mighty blow, defeats her for good. Sajin next wanted to face Yhwach, but he reverted into a helpless dog first.

9 He made Iba his successor

When Squad 7 is first seen, Komamura is the captain, and Tetsuzaemon Iba is the lieutenant who's always by his side. But after Sajin's final battle, he's not fit to be captain, so the final chapter shows Iba in this role instead.

It's not yet clear if Iba achieved Bankai at this point, but we have to trust that Sajin was correct to allow Iba to step into his shoes as captain. Most likely, Sajin is watching from afar, supporting Captain Iba all the way.

8 He's responsible

Despite his huge size and destructive power, Sajin Komamura has a sense of fairness. It is made clear that Soul Reapers have their own currency, and they get paid for their work.

As such, a Soul Reaper who damages any property during battle needs to cover the expenses, and Sajin is always willing to pay for any devastation his fierce fights cause. Captain Hitsugaya comments on this, impressed at Sajin's mature attitude about it.

Where do you live, and who do you associate with, when you're a giant with a wolf head? For many years, Sajin had no community to call home, but that soon changed. He met Kaname Tosen, who was blind, and Tosen had no prejudice or fear of Sajin's appearance.

They sparked a friendship, and Sajin was soon allowed to join the Gotei 13 as a Soul Reaper through Tosen. This is why Sajin was so distraught when Tosen joined Aizen and betrayed the Gotei 13.

6 He owes Yamamoto his life

Put simply, Head Captain Genryusai Yamamoto means everything to him. In fact, Yamamoto is a sort of Albus Dumbledore analog, being the wise old man who has no prejudice and gives other people a second chance to succeed, no matter who they are or where they came from.

This is made clear more than once, as Sajin once commented that he would give his very life if Yamamoto needed him to perish fighting his enemies. Not to mention that Sajin was bitterly determined to wipe out the Sternritters to avenge Yamamoto's death.

5 His Shikai is rarely shown

Most Captains in Bleach are capable of Bankai, and certainly all of them can perform the lesser stage of release, Shikai. Many different Shikai are seen in this series, but not Sajin Komamura's. At least, not very often.

For the most part, it's just a partial version of his Bankai. Instead, Komamura has a preference for using his Bankai (Kokujo Tengen Myo-Oh) straight away, to devastating effect. He's a fairly straightforward fighter, and against his most fearsome enemies, why not bring out the Bankai? It's a thrill to watch!

4 His dog, Goro

Sajin is sometimes teased for having a dog's head, but in fact, he really does have a pet dog! He's got a hound named Goro, and he really dotes on her. He keeps Goro in the Squad 7 barracks, and likes to take her out for walks.

Not only that, but as a good dog dad, he carefully brushes Goro's fur, and he also visits the World of the Living to watch their puppy shows. Under that scary exterior is a cuddly guy after all!

3 Jokes about his gigai

A gigai is a false, mortal body that a Soul Reaper can use to visit the World of the Living and interact with humans, since they are not in Soul form. Only a few characters are seen doing this, such as Renji, Rukia, and Rangiku, among others.

Sajin never did that, so now we're wondering: what would his gigai look like, anyway? A gigai typically looks like the person using it, but in Sajin's case, perhaps a fully dog-like gigai would be best?

2 He's gracious

Sajin Komamura has a heart of gold, and not just because he is willing to pay for any damage that he causes during battle. During the battle in the replica Karakura Town, Lieutenant Ikakku Madarame loses to the arrancar Poww due to pride, and Sajin steps in.

Tetsuzaemon Iba berates Ikakku for holding back, and says that he won't inform Captain Komamura about Ikakku's secret Bankai. Sajin happens by and hears it anyway, and Iba is apprehensive. Then, Sajin makes it clear that he won't share the secret, claiming that his hearing is bad today and he didn't hear what was said.

1 Extra accessories

Many of the Captains in Bleach add some personal accessories to their outfits, either for battle's sake or just for show. Shunsui Kyoraku of Squad 8 wears a colorful robe over his captain's robes, and Byakuya has an expensive green scarf while Kaname Tosen swaps straw sandals and socks for boots. This includes Sajin, who also wears tough boots like Kaname does, rather than flimsy straw sandals and tabi socks.

Not only that, but he wears armored guards on his arms, and he's got a brace around his neck for extra protection, and tough armor padding on his shoulders. For the longest time, he also wore a metal helmet to hide his face.
