After many years away, Bleach returned with a new one-shot centered around Hell and the terrifying mutant Hollows that dwell within. Set years after the end of the Thousand-Year Blood War arc, many characters have since died, grown-up or been promoted, including the Soul Reapers.
Each of the thirteen squads needs a Captain and a Lieutenant. The one-shot revealed some new officers in the ranks, as well as older officers, being shuffled around, and readers may want to know who is in charge of which squad before the new arc begins in earnest. This isn't the same Gotei 13 that opposed Ichigo during the Soul Society arc.
The New Lieutenants in the Gotei 13
A handful of Lieutenants serving in the Gotei 13 are either brand-new characters introduced in the Bleach one-shot, or used to belong to different squads and had an entirely different rank. The gyaru-loving officer Yuyu Yayahara is one of the new faces serving in Squad 8. She occupies the same rank once held by Nanao Ise, now of Squad 1. Yuyu's zanpakuto has not been revealed just yet, but she can perform a devastating melee attack modeled after a bear's jaws.
Rindo Atau is the new Lieutenant of Squad 7, occupying the rank Tetsuzaemon Iba held during the main Bleach story. Little is known about Rindo personally, aside from his habit of using sign language rather than spoken words to communicate. In battle, he can write an animal's name on his zanpakuto to summon animals of that type, such as birds.
Sentaro Kotsubaki was a minor character in the original Bleach, serving as the co-3rd seat with Kiyone Kotetsu, but he is now the Lieutenant of Squad 13. This new rank suggests Sentaro may have a more prominent role in the upcoming Hell story arc.
The New Captains in the Current Gotei 13
The Bleach one-shot also revealed a handful of the Gotei 13's Captains have been shuffled around, with some now holding that rank for the first time. Shunsui Kyoraku, who once led Squad 8, is now Squad 1's Captain, taking the place of the late Shigekuni Yamamoto. Shunsui's age, experience and strength allow him to smoothly replace Yamamoto as the commander of all Captains.
Rukia Kuchiki got a big promotion, going from a seated officer in Squad 13 to becoming its new Captain, replacing the late Jushiro Ukitake who once gave his life to restore the Soul King. This means Rukia and her foster brother Byakuya are now equals. It also gives Ichigo, Rukia's longtime friend, even more influence in the Soul Society.
Tetsuzaemon Iba has also been promoted from Lieutenant to Captain within Squad 7, replacing Sajin Komamura. Iba is now Rindo Atau's senior officer. Isane Kotetsu, once Squad 4's Lieutenant, now serves as its Captain in replacing the late Retsu Unohana. Isane appears somewhat overwhelmed by her new duties but she does have her little sister, Kiyone, to keep her company as her Lieutenant.
Lisa Yadomaru, one of the eight Visored warriors in Bleach, now serves as Squad 8's new Captain. She was its Lieutenant over a century ago, serving under Captain Kyoraku until she fled the Soul Society with the other Visoreds. Lisa has since returned to her Soul Reaper duties and attained a higher rank than before. This contrasts her with fellow Visoreds Shinji, Rojuro and Kensei, who returned to their previous ranks as Captains.
