The Espadas are the top 10 most powerful arrancars in Bleach, and they're a scary bunch. An arrancar is a hollow that had its mask removed, restored its human shape, and has a zanpakuto (which contains their original hollow form). The traitor Captain Sosuke Aizen assembled the ten toughest arrancars and proclaimed them the Espadas, ranked 1-10 in order of power. The Septima Espada, or the 7th, is Zommari Rureaux.

Fellow Espadas Ulquiorra and Grimmjow are the most iconic ones, and they dominate Bleach's story and fan art alike. Still, #7 is a fascinating Espada with truly unique abilities, and a distinct personality. What is there to know about this frequently overlooked villain?

10 His Gemelos Sonido

Arrancars have a number of basic, universal abilities with Spanish names, from their hierro (iron) skin to firing cero (zero) energy blasts in battle. They can also perform sonido (sound), the equivalent of the Soul Reapers' flash step. The Espadas are all lightning-fast and can keep pace with Soul Reaper Captains, but Zommari is the quickest of all.

This clever Espada developed the Gemelos Sonido, where he creates after-images, or speed-based clones to disorient his enemies. The clones are so realistic, they even bleed when attacked, as Byakuya Kuchiki soon found it. According to Zommari himself, he can make up to five figures this way.

9 His kingly attitude

Contrary to his cool-headed nature, Zommari is actually quite arrogant (more on that later). His release form, Brujeria, allows him to control living things when his enchanted eyes look at them. In this way, he becomes a puppet master, but he really fancies himself a king.

Zommari lectured Byakuya about it, saying how the clouds are subject to wind and subjects are loyal to their king. Zommari took control of Byakuya's left arm and leg this way, along with Rukia's entire body.

8 Mask remains

All arrancars have little pieces of their hollow mask remains left on their heads somewhere, most of them unique in shape. Grimmjow has his right jawbone, Szayelaporro's look like eyeglasses, and some even look like helmets.

Zommari's remains are split into pieces, such as the crest of short horns on his head, along with his earrings. Those skull and crossbone earrings aren't just for show; they're a legacy of his hollow days, and he once had a full mask. It's not clear, though, whether his bony necklace is just decorative or also part of his hollow remains.

7 He despises the status quo

Why do Soul Reapers don black robes, sheathe a sword, and patrol the world of the living? Simple: to purify hollows and escort their souls to the afterlife. And hollows that were evil in life are sent straight to Hell itself!

Zommari cannot stand that, and according to him, Soul Reapers do not truly have the right to hunt hollows. It's an interesting perspective to see, how the hunted make a case that they are unfairly prosecuted for eating souls. To evade the issue, Byakuya announces that he will slay Zommari not out of duty, but as retaliation for Zommari trying to kill Rukia.

6 His hypocrisy

It was mentioned earlier that Zommari fancies himself a king when his released form is active, since he can control people like a puppet master. He also scolds Byakuya for acting superior during their battle, and it upsets him.

Ironically, Zommari does much the same, assuming that he is superior without fully evaluating or appreciating the extent of Byakuya's abilities. While Zommari is indeed a fearsome warrior, his attitude got the best of him, and he wasn't able to fight at full power. He defeated himself with his hypocritical arrogance.

5 He's cold and ruthless

Some of the arrancars are truly ruthless and vicious, such as Barragan and Ulquiorra. This includes the Septima Espada, who is not here to play games. He found an injured Rukia, and mocked Aaroniero for not finishing her off.

So, Zommari was ready to slice off a helpless Rukia's head right then and there. And during the battle, Zommari poised Rukia's own sword at her neck at an attempt to force Byakuya to stand down. Zommari sure doesn't take prisoners, and he thinks that some of the Espadas are "soft." Chilling!

4 His monk lifestyle

By now, it's becoming clear that Zommari is a bizarre study in opposites. You never know what he will do or say, due to his contrary nature. He derides arrogance, but is arrogant himself. He is a calm monk, but also can fly into a fit of rage.

Ordinarily, Zommari is a monk-like figure, and his Las Noches palace is a place where he sits in quiet meditation to keep his mind at peace, ready for battle. And unless Byakuya angers him, he's quite cool and collected in battle. Even his release's name, Brujeria, is Spanish for "witchcraft," although it has also been translated as "cursing eye monk."

3 His own king, Aizen

Here's another example of how Zommari is an erratic study of opposites. He proclaims himself the king of the battlefield, since his eyes allow him to control anything that they see (he has at least 50 of them). This helps fuel his superiority complex.

But even he acknowledges someone higher: Sosuke Aizen. Some Espadas are more loyal to Aizen than others, from Barragan's deep resentment of him all the way to Ulquiorra's streadfast obedience. Zommari is also quite loyal, and with his dying breath, he shouted praise for Aizen with utmost devotion.

2 His outfit

Most of the Soul Reapers dress the same way, and their uniform is pretty consistent. The Sternritters of the Wandenreich also have pretty standard uniforms, though there's some small variations among them.

Arrancars have a more diverse wardrobe, though. The only unifying theme is that they invert the colors of the Soul Reapers, being mainly white with black accents, and black socks. Zommari wears an outfit similar to Mandarin clothes, such as his long tunic and his martial arts shoes. This fits his monk-like attitude, making him a vague analog for Shaolin monks or something similar. His spiritual pressure is pink, and that reflects in his sword sheath.

1 His abilities

As Captain Kuchiki soon found out, Zommari Rureaux has a quite unique ability. It is named Amor, for the love that servants have for their masters. When one of Zommari's eyes see something, a sunburst pattern appears on it, and Zommari assumes total control.

This ability is rather similar to a kido spell, and it doesn't take Byakuya long to realize that. Fortunately, after a few instances of Amor wreaking havoc, Byakuya throws up a bakudo spell, Danku, and blocks further attempts at using Amor. Danku is used to block kido (Aizen once did that as well), and it worked here, too.
