The highly anticipated anime prequel to Blade Runner 2049 has arrived from Shinichiro Watanabe, the acclaimed director of Cowboy Bebop and Samurai Champloo.

Available on Crunchyroll, the short Blade Runner Black Out 2022 takes place three years after the events of Ridley Scott's 1982 masterpiece.

Blade Runnder Black Out 2022 follows two fugitive Replicants on a mission to set off an EMP charge over Los Angeles in hopes of erasing any records of Nexus models' identities. The short includes a number of visual references to both the original Blade Runner and the upcoming sequel, not to mention a brief voice cameo from Edward James Olmos (Battlestar Galactica), who will also apparently reprise his role as Gaff in Blade Runner 2049.

Officer K (Ryan Gosling), a new blade runner for the Los Angeles Police Department, unearths a long-buried secret that has the potential to plunge what's left of society into chaos. His discovery leads him on a quest to find Rick Deckard (Harrison Ford), a former blade runner who's been missing for 30 years.

Directed by Denis Villeneuve (Arrival) from a script by Hampton Fancher and Michael Green, Blade Runner 2049 stars Ryan Gosling, Harrison Ford, Ana de Armas, Robin Wright, Jared Leto, Barkhad Abdi, Lennie James, Mackenzie Davis and Sylvia Hoeks. Executive produced by Ridley Scott, the film arrives in theaters on Oct. 6.
