Warner Bros. has released a new English-subtitled trailer for the upcoming Blade of the Immortal live-action film, based on Hiroaki Samura’s classic samurai action manga.

The movie will be the 100th production directed by the iconic Japanese director Takashi Miike, best known in the West for the extreme, and often stylized, violence in his work, which includes Audition, Ichi the Killer and 13 Assassins.

Judging from the trailer, Blade of the Immortal is set to keep up this bloody tradition, with plenty of limb-severing action and exquisitely shot action set-pieces.

The Blade of the Immortal manga follows the cursed samurai Manji, who cannot die, but has one weakness: a rare poison. In Manji’s travels, he joins with a young girl named Asano Rin to help her avenge her parents and, in the process, runs afoul of a group of skilled swordsmen and the feudal government.

Blade of the Immortal was adapted in 2008 by producer Bee Train as an anime series directed by the studio’s founder Kōichi Mashimo. Mashimo has been involved with nearly every project the studio has produced since its inception in 1997, including the .hack//SIGN series and its subsequent spinoffs.

Now playing in Japan, Blade of the Immortal stars Takuya Kimura and Hana Sugisaki.
