Warner Bros. Pictures has released a new Japanese language trailer for the upcoming “Blade of the Immortal” live-action adaptation. The film will adapt Hiroaki Samura's samurai action manga of the same name for the big screen.
The “Blade of the Immortal” manga follows the cursed samurai Manji; though he cannot die, he has one weakness: a rare poison. In Manji’s travels, he joins with a young girl named Asano Rin to help her avenge her parents and, in the process, runs afoul of a group of skilled swordsmen and the feudal government.
The film adaptation will be helmed by Takashi Miike, a highly controversial Japanese film director. Miike is known for incorporating extreme violence and bizarre drama into his films, which include the likes of “Audition,” “Ichi the Killer” and “13 Assassins.” Miike is credited with having directed 100 theatrical, video and television productions since 1991.
“Blade of the Immortal” was adapted into an anime television series by producer Bee Train and was directed by the studio’s founder Kōichi Mashimo in 2008. Mashimo has been involved with nearly every project the studio has produced since its inception in 1997, which includes the “.hack//SIGN” series and its subsequent spinoffs.
Debuting in Japan on April 29, “Blade of the Immortal” is directed by Takashi Miike and stars Takuya Kimura and Hana Sugisaki.
