WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Marvel's Black Widow, now in theaters and on Disney+ Premier Access.

It was safe to assume Black Widow would wrap the definitive bow on the story of Natasha Romanoff (Scarlett Johansson). Given her death in Avengers: Endgame, the only mysteries left were those connected to her origin in the Red Room, her defection to S.H.I.E.L.D. and tidbits on her "family" from Russia. But while most of these are expanded on, given the vast array of characters involved, the film does leave a few questions unanswered by the time the credits roll.

What Happened to Russia's Super-Soldiers?

Alexei, aka Red Guardian, claims he's Russia's only super-soldier, and he's an impressive one at that, chucking trucks away and scaling prison walls. However, given that the serum worked on him, it's strange that only one version of him exists. Black Widow does little to explain the origins of Alexei's strength, but given the behind-the-scenes super-soldier war that was touched upon in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, it's a mystery that needs to be solved.

Why Was Alexei Imprisoned?

David Harbour as Alexei Shostakov/Red Guardian in Black Widow.

Alexei spews a lot of hatred over how Dreykov backstabbed and threw him into a Russian snow prison, but the movie never explains the circumstances of the betrayal. While Red Guardian glosses it over with some weird rationales, there must've been a real breaking point. Before Natasha and Yelena broke him out, he was in jail for 20 years, so it couldn't have been to protect secrets, or he would've most certainly been killed.

What Other Projects Did Milena Work On?

Milena was far from just a housewife in Black Widow, being the one who helped convert the stolen data into flawless mind-control -- something not even Hydra could crack with its Winter Soldier. With her being that formidable, there are sure to be other projects she worked on for the Red Room, whether it be with the Widows or other operatives. And given she had access to Alexei's blood, it's not far-fetched to think she might have tried to make Russian super-soldiers at some point.

How Did Natasha Escape Ross?

In the third act of Black Widow, as Natasha's family escapes with the freed Widows, she waits for General Ross' crew to arrest her. It's more or less implied that she's about to get locked up, wanting to finally atone for what she's done, and yet, the next scene shows her free and meeting Mason for the Quinjet. While it made for a dramatic moment when the movie cuts as Ross pulls up, leaving Natasha's escape out of the film leaves another mystery.

What Happened to the Other Black Widows?

The finale sees the Widows in the Red Room being "deactivated" by the red gas, and they're all now determined to save the thousands of others Dreykov seeded out around the globe. But after that mission is complete, countless trained assassins without known families to return to will find their way into a strange world. Sure, some of them might try to have a regular life, but as seen with Yelena, it's hard to stay away forever.

How Long Has Yelena Been Working With Valentina?

Yelena and Valentina in Black Widow's post-credits scene

Valentina meets Yelena at Natasha's grave in the post-credits of Black Widow to discuss a new mission, with Yelena admitting she wants a raise. But a more important detail about the scene is that Yelena's upset that Val's intruding on her vacation, which means they've been working together for some time. As is par the course with most Marvel Cinematic Universe post-credits scenes, this one leaves fans with more questions than answers, including the duration of this relationship and if either, or both of them, were victims of the Blip.

How Does Valentina Know Hawkeye "Killed" Natasha?

Obviously, Val's resourceful, basically acting as a dark shadow of Nick Fury, but it's still strange she knew about what Clint and Natasha went through on Vormir. That information seems like something only Earth's Mightiest Heroes would be privy to, and it's hard to see them spilling this secret to anyone. Sure, it's possible the information was made public, as seen in WandaVision, but a detail this specific could mean there's a mole among the Avengers.

Why Didn't Natasha Use Rick More?

Rick's a handy resource to have, as he's able to get Natasha new identities and a Quinjet as long as she gives him enough time. It's clear they've got a longstanding relationship, so it's odd that she didn't use him more when they went on the lam in Avengers: Age of Ultron or The Winter Soldier. His services would've been a great asset, especially when Ross was hunting her and Cap in Infinity War.

Did Red Guardian Really Fight Captain America?

In prison, Alexei says he fought Captain America, despite him not coming out of the ice until the 2010s. He's adamant throughout the film that he did face a Sentinel of Liberty, but rather than him actually being delusional, it could be that he fought an American super-soldier like  Isaiah Bradley, who only recently appeared in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier. The MCU's super-soldiers have a complicated history, and Black Widow only adds to it.

What Happened to Alexei and Melina After Black Widow?

Black-Widow-Melina-Red-Guardian-Yelena-Header

At the end of Black Widow, Melina and Alexei leave with the deactivated Widows and Taskmaster to start work on freeing the remaining Widows. But, given they didn't appear in Infinity War when Natasha's team needed allies, their roles in the present MCU are a bit unclear. They may have gotten caught in the Snap, but with Yelena already working with Val, there's still much to be explored with Red Guardian and Iron Maiden.

Directed by Cate Shortland, Black Widow stars Scarlett Johansson as Natasha Romanoff/Black Widow, Florence Pugh as Yelena Belova, David Harbour as Alexei Shostakov/Red Guardian, O-T Fagbenle as Mason and Rachel Weisz as Melina Vostokoff. The film is now playing in theaters and on Disney+ Premier Access.
