New set photos from Marvel's Black Widow tease the return of William Hurt as Thunderbolt Ross in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
JustJared shared the set photos, which show Hurt seemingly shooting a scene. The shoot is believed to be additional photography for the film, though it's not known whether that makes Hurt a new addition or whether he secretly filmed previously. Scarlet Johansson doesn't appear in the photos, and it's not clear what the scene in question involves.
Ross was last seen at the funeral of Tony Stark in Avengers: Endgame. However, it has long been known that Black Widow will take place shortly after Captain America: Civil War, which saw Hurt return to the MCU after last appearing in The Incredible Hulk.
Though Marvel Studios has largely ignored that film since recasting Bruce Banner, it's clear the studio doesn't want to lose an actor of Hurt's caliber. And, with Ross now serving as the Secretary of State in the MCU (at least around the time of Civil War), it makes sense that a spy-thriller like Black Widow would make good use of him. Hopefully, we'll learn more about Ross' role in the film soon.
Directed by Cate Shortland, Black Widow stars Scarlett Johansson, David Harbour, Florence Pugh, O-T Fagbenle and Rachel Weisz. The film arrives in theaters on May 1, 2020.
