One of the standout characters of the MCU is the Black Widow. Since first appearing in Iron Man 2, her character arc continued to grow. As such, fans were a little shocked when she was killed off in Avengers: Endgame. On the upside, she's finally getting her own solo movie that tells at least part of her story.

Early reviews are positive so far. If it's successful, it could be a new franchise shedding some light on the Widow's backstory. And if the MCU does decide to go down that route, there are a lot of great stories from the comics that could be adapted.

Black Widow kicks an enemy in the face

Every hero has their origins and Natasha Romanoff's was put together in Beware The Black Widow! It connects all the dots between her work with Hawkeye to her early days with the Avengers and even an encounter with Spider-Man.

But this wasn't one story. The collection puts together issues of Tales of Suspense, Avengers, Amazing Spider-Man, Daredevil, and more. They were subsequently combined into one book titled Beware The Black Widow! that gave fans a clear look at her beginnings.

9 Widowmaker Takes Natasha Worldwide

Black Widow and Hawkeye are ready to fight

Certain heroes just work well together. In Widowmaker, Black Widow works with Hawkeye, Mockingbird, Dominic Fortune to find out who is killing S.H.I.E.L.D. agents and Red Room recruits. This search led them all on a worldwide search for Ronin, a former identity Hawkeye went by.

What made this story work was the partnership between Black Widow and Hawkeye. The MCU has touched on this in a few movies over the years but the franchise has also made it clear that there's a bigger story to tell. Widowmaker could be a good one.

8 Deadly Origin Explores Her Past

The thing about Natasha is that she has a lot of red in her ledger. She's buried a lot of people over the years and committed a lot of heinous acts for some very bad people. But even Black Widow cannot escape the consequences of her actions forever.

Deadly Origin is about one of her old enemies coming back for revenge. There will always be stories like this to tell for Black Widow as her past is filled with action and intrigue. Honestly, the MCU could make multiple seasons of a Disney+ series just about her dealing with her past.

7 Encircle Gives Black Widow Her Own Time Travel Story

Black Widow is ready to time travel

Some Black Widow stories don't take too long to tell. This was the case with Encircle, a solo story in the pages of Secret Avengers #20. The entire team was killed and the only way to save them was for the Widow to time travel one year into the past.

Natasha doesn't always find herself involved in such shenanigans so this was unique for her. But it was also a very visual story with some interesting beats for her character. There were moments when she was trying to avoid the past versions of her teammates that were reminiscent of Back to the Future.

6 Web Of Intrigue Saved Nick Fury

Black Widow swings into action

While she has cemented herself as a prominent hero alongside her fellow Avengers, that can make it easy to forget how entrenched a spy Black Widow was. As the title would suggest, Web of Intrigue certainly explored that side of her career.

The story featured Black Widow saving Nick Fury's butt, though she also worked with other members of Marvel's espionage elite like Jimmy Woo. Virtually any MCU fan would love to watch Black Widow and Jimmy Woo work together.

5 S.H.I.E.L.D.'s Most Wanted Put Her Up Against Her Friends

Black Widow goes on the run

After some of her darkest secrets got made public, S.H.I.E.L.D. declared Black Widow to be public enemy number one and tried to chase her down. Naturally, she stayed one step ahead of them. And while they did their best to bring her in, she kept helping them by still fighting the good fight.

Black Widow may have started her tenure in Marvel Comics as a villain but this story showed how committed she was to being a hero. It would be interesting for the MCU to put a story like this together where S.H.I.E.L.D. tries and fails to take Black Widow down.

4 I Got The Yo-Yo...You Got The String Was A '70s-Era Romp In Stylish Black & White

Black Widow strikes a pose

In the late 1970s and early '80s, Marvel had a title called Marvel Preview that contained a variety of stories relating to different characters. It was eventually retitled Bizarre Adventures, one issue of which featured a Black Widow story titled I Got The Yo-Yo...You Got The String.

It was all about S.H.I.E.L.D. sending her to sort out the death of an agent when some good ol' fashion spy intrigue sets in. The mood of the story was only enhanced by being printed in black and white. Telling an MCU Black Widow story in black and white could actually be kind of interesting.

3 The Name Of The Rose Shows How Good She Is

Black Widow takes aim at her enemies

While it might not seem like it at times, Black Widow is one of the toughest people in Marvel Comics. She and Hawkeye fight alongside gods and monsters on the Avengers without even a drop of something like the Super Soldier Serum. But The Name of the Rose pushed her to the limit.

When someone tried to assassinate the Widow and almost succeeded, she was gravely injured. That didn't stop her from trying to track whoever did it down. Watching Black Widow get backed into a corner like that and fight her way out could only be amazing in the MCU.

2 The Itsy-Bitsy Spider Is A Solid Spy Story

Black Widow and Yelena Belova back to back

It doesn't matter how big and bad a hero is, there's always someone waiting in the wings to prove them wrong. In Black Widow's case, that's Yelena Belova, another Russian agent who wants to prove she's the better spy.

Yelena Belova is part of the MCU as of the first Black Widow solo film. That means that a story like this pitting Natasha and Yelena against each other is a possibility. That being said, it probably won't play out exactly as it did in the comics.

1 Breakdown Weaves A Tangled Web

Black Widow and Yelena Belova may kill each other

When there are two Black Widows on the case, things can get pretty messy for whoever they are targeting. This was certainly an issue in Breakdown, a 2001 story that partnered Natasha Romanoff and Yelena Belova together on a mission.

Given the nature of the Black Widow movie, there is potential in this specific story to deepen the story between the two characters. There is a strong connection between them and adapting Breakdown would keep building it.
