Although Marvel Studios has not yet officially announced a Black Widow film, production kicked off in Norway a few days ago and photos have continued to surface online. Although little information could be gleaned from the set photos, this latest batch possibly reveals some story details.
In a new set of photos posted on Twitter, as well as Appocalypse.co, Scarlett Johansson can be seen in character near a body of water with a bright red object in tow -- which some fans are speculating is an Infinity Stone. In the same set of photos, Natasha can also be seen attending a funeral, although it's not clear who the funeral is for through these photos.
When word got out that Marvel was finally making a solo Black Widow movie, fans began to speculate that, despite getting a solo film, she wouldn't survive Avengers: Endgame. Of course, this turned out to be true as Natasha sacrificed herself so Clint Barton could retrieve the Soul Stone and assured the Avengers completed the mission they'd set out on. And like with Gamora, Black Widow's death appears to be permanent, although the character could exist in other time periods. Still, it's hard to tell if the new set photos are teasing a return of Black Widow.
While some are holding out hope that Black Widow will return from her death on Vormir, all reports point to the film being a prequel, with some reports stating it takes place after the events of Captain America: Civil War.
We should begin to get a better idea of what is actually taking place in the film next month when Marvel Studios finally returns to Comic-Con International to take the stage at Hall H. It's expected that Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige will not only confirm Black Widow, The Eternals and Shang-Chi during Marvel's panel, but also possibly unveil the first look at Black Widow.
Directed by Cate Shortland with a script by Ned Benson, Black Widow stars Scarlett Johansson and is rumored to be released on May 1, 2020.
