WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Marvel's Black Widow, now playing in theaters and on Disney+ Premier Access.

Prior to her first appearance in Iron Man 2, Natasha Romanoff/Black Widow was an operative for the Red Room, an organization that engages in espionage and murder. Now, in Black Widow, Natasha's backstory has been fleshed out even more, and it's revealed that as a result of her defection and attempted assassination of the group's leader, Dreykov, the Red Room began using mind control on its agents. Here's what you need to know about mind control in Black Widow.

Originally, the Red Room only used psychological conditioning to brainwash its agents. However, later generations were actually altered chemically, essentially rendering them unable to control their own bodies. Melinda -- who acted as a mother to both Natasha and Yelena Belova -- created a specific chemical that Dreykov then employed so as to control them without respect for their safety or well-being. The main plot of Black Widow then involves protecting and disseminating a chemical that will actually free the Red Room's agents from Dreykov's horrible level of control.

Currently, Black Widow holds an 80 percent on Rotten Tomatoes.
