When creating Black Widow, Marvel Studios turned to some sci-fi staples for inspiration. According to star Scarlett Johansson, films like Logan and Terminator 2 were discussed during the making of the Black Widow solo movie.

"It's pretty gritty, but it's also surprising," she told MTV. "It's kind of in its own genre, but some of the movies that we talked about -- you know, we talked about The Fugitive, we talked about Logan, we talked about Terminator 2."

Asked what she wanted to see in the movie, she replied, "It's funny. I talked to Kevin [Feige] about this and I was like, 'A few things.' One, I want the film to do really well and for people to enjoy it and all of that -- for it to have success. Two, I want it to fulfilling for fans of Marvel, for fans of the character. The third thing was that I want to be the same person that I've been throughout these 10 years. I don't want it to feel like, just because this character has a standalone, it's not grounded in the history that we already know of the character. So I wanted you to feel like that the character is carrying the weight of all we know. So that's what I think we're currently doing!"

Directed by Cate Shortland, Black Widow stars Scarlett Johansson, David Harbour, Florence Pugh, O-T Fagbenle and Rachel Weisz. The film arrives in theaters on May 1, 2020.
