With casting under way for Marvel's Black Widow , the studio is searching for a co-lead, with Beauty and the Beast star Emma Watson reportedly considered the frontrunner.

Character breakdowns that surfaced in November described the character as a "kickass female [James Bond]" who is expected to participate in a lot of the film's action sequences.

Other actors purportedly in consideration for the role include Alice Englert (Beautiful Creatures), Dar Zuzovsky (Hostages) and Florence Pugh (Fighting with My Family), with Englert and Zuzovsky said to have already auditioned.

While no one has been offered the role, and no one has been announced for the film outside of Scarlett Johansson, filming on the Marvel Cinematic Universe feature is expected to begin in June.

Black Widow is set to be directed by Cate Shortland (Berlin Syndrome) from a script by Jac Schaeffer (Captain Marvel). The film will see Scarlett Johansson reprise her role as Natasha Romanoff, aka Black Widow, and is expected to be a prequel much like Captain Marvel. While an official release date has not yet been announced, Black Widow is rumored to hit the big screen on May 1, 2020.
