The Marvel Cinematic Universe Phase 4 officially kicks off this summer with Black Widow. In anticipation for the upcoming film, Marvel Studios updated its official synopsis for Scarlett Johansson's return as the founding Avenger and longtime super-spy.

Set between the events of Captain America: Civil War and Avengers: Infinity War, Black Widow will explore a shadowy conspiracy with links to Natasha's past as a Russian spy and assassin. Hunted, Natasha revisits relationships she left far behind before joining with S.H.I.E.L.D. and Earth's Mightiest Heroes. The updated synopsis from Marvel Studios is below.

In Marvel Studios’ action-packed spy thriller Black Widow, Natasha Romanoff aka Black Widow confronts the darker parts of her ledger when a dangerous conspiracy with ties to her past arises. Pursued by a force that will stop at nothing to bring her down, Natasha must deal with her history as a spy and the broken relationships left in her wake long before she became an Avenger.

The film's latest trailer showed Black Widow reuniting with her old associates and surrogate family Yelena and Alexei. Together, they plan to confront a new program connected to the Red Room, which trained them as deadly assassins like the masked Taskmaster. With the new synopsis, it appears Black Widow will have to confront her past to save the MCU's future.

Directed by Cate Shortland, Black Widow stars Scarlett Johansson as Natasha, Florence Pugh stars as Yelena, David Harbour as Alexei aka The Red Guardian and Rachel Weisz as Melina. The film opens on May 1, 2020.
