A new clip from Black Widow shows off Alexei Shostakov's capabilities as the Red Guardian.
The clip, called "Prison Break," sees Natasha Romanov and Yelena Belova aboard a helicopter as they attempt to guide Shostakov out of jail amidst a riot. Along the way, he shows off his enhanced strength and agility as a super-soldier, though the action shows he's not quite the perfect athlete he may have once been.
Despite being Russia's answer to Captain America, it's clear Red Guardian lacks Steve Rogers' finesse. David Harbour, who plays Red Guardian in the film, recently shared a post on Instagram hinting at the arrival of the Winter Guard, a team of Slavic superheroes meant to be Russia's answer to the Avengers. So we may yet see how a whole team of Russian Avengers would handle saving the world.
Harbour also recently discussed where Shostakov was during the events of Avengers: Endgame since Black Widow takes place before that. "I mean the fun thing about this entire thing is that we go back and we build out this structure for something new," Harbour said. "[Director] Cate Shortland and I had all kinds of speculations about where Red Guardian is, and what happens to him. There were a lot of fun ideas."
Directed by Cate Shortland, Black Widow stars Scarlett Johansson as Natasha Romanoff/Black Widow, Florence Pugh as Yelena Belova, David Harbour as Alexei Shostakov/Red Guardian, O-T Fagbenle as Mason and Rachel Weisz as Melina Vostokoff. The film arrives in theaters and on Disney+ Premier Access July 9.
