Black Widow director Cate Shortland was recently asked about the potential for a sequel to Black Widow and she seemed to indicate that she thinks that there remains a strong possibility of more to come, but the question, of course, is who such a film would star.

Black Widow is set to star Scarlett Johansson as Natasha Romanoff, the Black Widow, and the film takes place between the events of Captain America: Civil War, where Natasha went on the run along with Captain America, Falcon and the Scarlet Witch, and the events of Avengers: Infinity War/Endgame, where the Avengers reunite and Natasha sacrifices herself to secure the Soul Gem needed to put the Infinity Gauntlet back together to undo Thanos' "snap" that killed half of the living beings in the universe.

Naturally, having a film like this released after the lead character has already died has seemingly reduced the chances of the star of the film continuing in more films, but when asked about the possibility of a sequel, Shortland told Deadline, "I think these girls have got a lot of asses still to kick."

Note, though, that she was not specific about who will be kicking those asses. We know that Florence Pugh's Yelena Belova will be appearing in the upcoming Disney+ Hawkeye series, so perhaps she will carry on the Black Widow name. Recently, Shortland went into more detail about a possible sequel to the Radio Times, "I think following a different character, yes. I think Scarlett is really happy that she’s leaving the party, you know, and she’s not the last to leave. She decided she wanted to go. And I don’t think she would want to come back at the moment.”

Shortland also revealed whether she would be interested in doing a sequel herself, explaining, “I mean, all the beautiful fights and the spectacle, and I think just creating something really fun and joyous is pretty addictive. So yeah, I would do it again. Yes. I feel really happy about it. Usually I feel dread when I have something coming out, but this time, I feel really happy. I think because it was such a group effort.”

Directed by Cate Shortland, Black Widow stars Scarlett Johansson as Natasha Romanoff/Black Widow, Florence Pugh as Yelena Belova, David Harbour as Alexei Shostakov/Red Guardian, O-T Fagbenle as Mason and Rachel Weisz as Melina Vostokoff. The film arrives in theaters and on Disney+ Premier Access July 9.
