The following contains spoilers for Episode 5 of Black Summoner, "Daughter of the Demon King," now streaming on Crunchyroll.

Black Summoner is a stylish isekai anime title of the Summer 2022 season, starring the powerhouse summoner known as Kelvin. He has already established himself as a benign power fantasy character, always getting his way and rapidly leveling up in just five episodes' time -- but his party members are a different matter.

What makes Black Summoner fun is not Kelvin himself but the people and creatures he recruits, from the cheerful blue slime to Clotho to the pompous knight Gerard and the charming elf girl Efil. Episode 5 adds another party member, Sera, who brings a refreshing worldview on this otherwise routine isekai adventure. The show very much needed this.

Episode 5 of Black Summoner finds Kelvin the hero continuing his battle against the mighty demon warrior Victor. Both sides go all out until Kelvin's party finally gains the upper hand and defeats Victor, who lays on the floor and is slowly dying. He then explains his true motivations: to protect the demon king's only daughter, Sera, and make sure she could become the next demon king -- or perhaps queen -- of a peaceful world where none could oppose her.

Some heartwarming flashbacks support Victor's words, showing him and the younger Sera training together and him acting as her caring guardian and mentor. Victor clearly has good intentions, so Kelvin promises him to free Sera from her binding curse and look after her. Content with that, Victor perishes -- and Sera wakes at last.

Despite being a demon princess, Sera is not at all an arrogant himedere or even particularly confident in herself. Instead, she cries with grief over her father's and Victor's deaths, then gladly joins Kelvin's party as yet another summoned being. However, Sera is totally ignorant of the world and its ways, and worse yet, no one will accept her for what she is. This means Sera has everything to fear from the world, but remarkably, she is determined to explore the realm and learn all about it.

Having previously lived in isolation, Sera is determined to make up for lost time. That proves her courage and curiosity as a girl who has everything to gain, and it's a pleasant sight to see. She is taking control of her own life for the first time and can repay Victor and her father by learning new things and becoming a happy, independent young adult. That's what any father, demon king or not, would want for their child.

Sera's boundless curiosity and enthusiasm do more for Black Summoner than simply adding another wholesome character to the main cast. Her viewpoint is a fresh one since she used to live in total isolation, and she is more of an explorer than Kelvin is. The latter may be an isekai protagonist, but he has a pretty conventional attitude and takes everything for granted. Despite lacking his previous memories, he doesn't seem very curious or adventurous, so viewers won't learn much of the world through his eyes. Luckily, Sera has arrived just in time to fulfill that role for him.

By its very nature, isekai is all about adventure, novelty and endless possibilities. Some isekai heroes take advantage of this while others do not, from Yuji in My Isekai Life searching the land for the ultimate meal to Ascendance of a Bookworm's Myne, who would rather make books than explore the realm.

Black Summoner is now poised to really explore its world and make it feel fresh and exciting through Sera's eyes; she may even wander off to see new things with Kelvin tagging along to chaperone her. It's a big world out there, and with Sera around, the anime is sure to look under every rock and peek around every corner to see what's there. Even if Sera ends up kicking the hornet's nest so to speak, it will be worth it for both her and the viewers.
