WARNING: The following contains major spoilers for Season 2 of Black Summer, now streaming on Netflix.

In Netflix's Black Summer, Season 1 proved that while many were indeed cut out for the zombie apocalypse, some just aren't survivors. It's why Rose (Jaime King) was so picky when it came to her crew as she didn't want anyone slowing them down en route to finding her daughter and escaping with the military. Luckily, as goofy as Lance (Kelsey Fowler) was, he managed to survive and show he had the chops to be part of the team. But as Season 2 begins, Black Summer brutally kills him off in the very first episode, shocking fans who thought the underdog would get a happy ending.

Many considered Lance lucky to be have ended last season alive, however, he got separated from the pack during another zombie attack. It seemed like Season 2 would focus on him and other allies trying to find their way back to the group in yet another separation, but things quickly take a drastic turn for the fan-favorite.

Lance is found siphoning gas in Season 2's premiere episode, "The Cold," jacking a car days later after he lost track of his buddies. But as he drives off, a seemingly pregnant woman, Sophie, runs in front his car, working the sympathy angle for him to stop. As he does, letting her in, another man, Luke, breaks in through the back and shoots Lance in the neck.

It's all a setup as Sophie's not even pregnant; she faked it all by stuffing clothes underneath her top. She didn't want Lance to be shot, though, yelling at Luke for what he just did. And in the blink of an eye, Lance turns, sending the duo into a panic.

Ironically, he'd spare Sophie as his rage and hunger focus only on Luke, who tries to drive off. Lance, though, jumps onto the roof and claws away at his killer, smashing through the sunroof as well. It culminates with Luke crashing the car, flinging Lance many feet away.

But the sad thing is, as Luke gets back to the warehouse Sophie's holed up in, she doesn't let him in. She sees him as nothing but a monster, and as an angry Luke tries to escape in another car, a speeding Lance runs and smashes through the driver's window to eat him.

It'd be the last we see of Lance, and while it hurts, at least he got sweet revenge. Still, it's bittersweet as he really came into his own with Rose's crew and with so many fans liking him, it shocked everyone that he'd die in such a fashion akin to The Departed. Had he listened more to Rose's advice to be distrusting and cynical, though, he might still be alive.

Co-created by John Hyams and Karl Schaefer, Black Summer stars Jaime King, Justin Chu Cary, Kelsey Flower, Bobby Naderi and Christine Lee. Season 2 is now available on Netflix.
