Black Panther: Wakanda Forever executive producer Victoria Alonso has revealed the meaning of Namor's name -- and it's a sad, somewhat relatable one.

Speaking to Deadline at the world premiere of the Black Panther sequel, Alonso gave insight into what the mutant's name translates to in English. The Argentine film producer and President of Physical, Post-Production VFX and Animation at Marvel Studios said that Namor's name in the Marvel Cinematic Universe means "El niño sin amor," which means "the boy without love" in English.

'My Enemies Call Me... Namor'

Namor is also known as Namor the Sub-Mariner or King Namor McKenzie. Played by Mexican actor Tenoch Huerta, Namor is a mutant in the MCU and rules the kingdom of Talocan (rather than Atlantis, which he rules in Marvel's comic book universe). Huerta hinted in interviews that Namor leads a bitter rivalry between Talocan and Wakanda because of a decision the late King T'Challa made at the end of the original Black Panther film.

The debut of Namor in Wakanda Forever marks another introduction of a mutant to the MCU, after Kamala Khan/Ms. Marvel in Ms. Marvel Season 1 and the Earth-838 variant of Professor Charles Xavier in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. Namor was introduced to the comics in 1939, though his mutant status wasn't widely described until the July 1963 edition of Fantastic Four Annual #1. Known for his superhuman endurance and strength, as well as his ability to breathe underwater, he is the hybrid son of a human explorer and sea captain, Leonard McKenzie, and an Atlantean mother, Fen, who is the daughter of Emperor Thakorr.

According to studio president Kevin Feige, bringing Namor to the big screen has been a goal of Marvel Studios' for close to 20 years. "So forever, he's been on our lists," Feige said. "I remember 18 years ago, putting together. I think we even commissioned a script 18 years ago. And the timing was never right, and the idea was never right." Feige also revealed that Black Panther and Wakanda Forever director Ryan Coogler began pitching a war between Wakanda and Atlantis while working on the former film.

Black Panther: Wakanda Forever makes its theatrical debut in North America on Nov. 11, 2022.
