To mark the beginning of ticket sales, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever dropped an exciting new trailer offering a glimpse at Namor's war against the surface world.
On top of offering a glimpse at the high-tech battle between the forces of Talocan and Wakanda, the film also debuts several new costumes and teases a more intense storyline centered on loss, strength and the heroes of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
While Namor is being adapted, certain aspects of the character and the civilization he is attached to are being reimagined for the MCU. Namely, his people and culture are no longer Atlantean. The underwater world he rules is the Aztec-inspired Talocan. Actor Tenoch Huerta, who plays Namor, previously explained the civilization's reasons behind its choice to surface now is directly tied to the end of Black Panther, where T'Challa revealed the truth of Wakanda to the entire world. This decision placed the people of Talocan in danger, though it is not yet clear how.
Meanwhile, in Wakanda, the royal family and its allies, including the Queen Mother, Shuri, Nakia, Okoye and M'Baku mourn the loss of T'Challa. Star Lupita Nyong'o previously discussed how the late Chadwick Boseman's death defined the Black Panther sequel and that it was rewritten to pay tribute to his iconic portrayal of Wakanda's ruler and hero. Of the final script, Nyong'o explained, "What [director Ryan Coogler] ended up sharing with me was just so utterly truthful and beautiful... By the end of it, I was in tears."
As Marvel Studios President and Chief Creative Officer Kevin Feige confirmed early on that the role of T'Challa would not be recast, there has been heavy speculation concerning the identity of the Black Panther mantle's inheritor. Merchandise for Wakanda Forever hints that Shuri will don the suit and take T'Challa's place as the superhero, but this has not been officially confirmed by Marvel Studios.
Details concerning the upcoming Black Panther film continue to be scarce, though recent reports suggest audiences can expect a runtime of approximately 2 hours and 45 minutes, making it one of Marvel Studios' longest projects to date, topped only by the 3 hour and 2 minute runtime of Avengers: Endgame. This information, currently provided by theaters, may be subject to change as the release draws nearer.
