The following contains major spoilers for Black Panther: Unconquered, available now from Marvel Comics.

In Black Panther lore, most of King T'Challa's journey has been defined by the Panther goddess, Bast. This being has empowered all of Wakanda's Black Panthers and given the African nation a heartbeat, lifting the people up in terms of spirituality, identity, as well culture. Along with the precious metal vibranium, the deity is indeed an iconic Wakandan totem, helping fuel T'Challa's fire.

Well, during the Black Panther: Unconquered one-shot (by Bryan Edward Hill, Alberto Foche Duarte, Matt Milla, and VC's Joe Sabino), T'Challa discovered that Bast had an archnemesis from centuries ago. And make no mistake, this god would like to see all of Bast's followers, and the Wakandan empire crumble. In the process, T'Challa also gets clues that a deadly war could be on the horizon.

Unconquered focuses on a Germanic cult known as the Volk breaking into a temple in West Africa. The leader, Archon, wants to find god-slaying weapons and become a God Killer, nodding to Thor's God butcher in Gorr. Luckily, T'Challa arrives, and a fight breaks out, at the base of two statues. There, Archon confesses he wants to be the avatar for Magba, the God of Rage.

It turns out, this is a mysterious new deity to the Wakandan pantheon who went to war with Bast. Now, its power flows through Archon as the villain wields Magba's spear. Thankfully, T'Challa is able to use a blade left behind from the crumbling statues, which Bast used in the past. This sword allows T'Challa to absorb Bast's power, reinforcing his abilities as the Panther God's vessel. The fight ends with T'Challa winning and Magba defeated but vowing revenge.

Now, while it's uncertain if Archon is still powered up, T'Challa knows trouble is brewing. It's tied to the henchman mentioning seven other relics and seven other God Killers. Thus, five more relics have to be found, which could see Magba rise up again and seek out allies (both gods and avatars) in the upcoming days. In Ta-Nehisi Coates' run, the Wakandan gods had a civil war, cutting shady figures who had no problem murdering. Thus, it might be that Bast and the other gods made other high-power, omnipotent enemies along the way.

It can lead to a bloody feud unfolding could that nods to the Moon Knight property as well, with gods searching for Chosen Ones to wield dangerous weapons and perhaps, execute revenge on Wakanda. The issue ends with T'Challa looking for help from the elders as he wants to study up. Clearly, he can sense Magba's watching and has sinister designs for his kingdom down the line. Ultimately, T'Challa has to unlock the truth about the past, Bast's role in history and the future, and exactly what he needs in order to evolve and save Wakanda.
