Ryan Coogler’s Black Panther is now among the top ten highest grossing films of all-time at the domestic box office, having earned over $500 million in North America.
That total puts Black Panther past Finding Dory, which was previously the tenth highest-grossing domestic film of all-time with $486.2 million. The movie is just shy of passing 2017’s Beauty and the Beast ($504 million). After Beauty and the Beast, Black Panther will have to beat fellow Disney film Rogue One ($532.1 million) and Warner Bros./DC movie The Dark Knight ($534.8 million) to continue climbing up the list.
The newest installment in the Marvel Cinematic Universe is still a fair distance away from supplanting Marvel’s The Avengers ($623 million) as the highest-grossing MCU film domestically. However, the movie has already surpassed the domestic total of Avengers: Age of Ultron, which earned $459 million domestically following its release in 2015.
Black Panther has continued to break records at the box office since its release, having already earned $897 million at the worldwide box office in just a few weeks. The film is in good position to earn a $1 billion worldwide, a coveted milestone. Black Panther has met with critical acclaim since its release in February, which has certainly helped to raise its total box office gains. The film currently holds a 97% on Rotten Tomatoes, making it the highest-rated movie in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Although a sequel is not currently confirmed, Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige mentioned in February that he’d like to see Coogler return to direct a potential follow-up. Black Panther 2 may end up being among the six untitled Marvel films set to release in 2021 and 2022.
In theaters now, director Ryan Coogler’s Black Panther stars Chadwick Boseman as T’Challa/Black Panther, Michael B. Jordan as N’Jadaka/Erik “Killmonger” Stevens, Lupita Nyong’o as Nakia, Danai Gurira as Okoye, Martin Freeman as Everett K. Ross, Daniel Kaluuya as W’Kabi, Letitia Wright as Shuri, Winston Duke as M’Baku, Angela Bassett as Ramonda, Forest Whitaker as Zuri and Andy Serkis as Ulysses Klaue.
