WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Black Panther #24, by Ta-Nehisi Coates, Daniel Acuna & VC's Joe Sabino, on sale now.

In the world of the X-Men, Professor Charles Xavier is the rock upon which the foundation of mutants has been built. His school for the "gifted" helped so many of the Children of the Atom find a home when xenophobes in society spewed nothing but pure, unadulterated hatred towards them. And a major part of this was due to his powers of telepathy, which helped him get inside these folks' minds, a tactic that worked wonders on the battlefield too.

And in Black Panther #24, King T'Challa calls on one X-Men veteran, Prodigy, to serve as his own battlefield equivalent to Professor X.

Prodigy, or David Alleyne, debuted in 2003's New Mutants from Nunzio DeFilippis, Christina Weir and Keron Grant, becoming part of Xavier's school due to his powers of telepathy which enabled him to absorb info from people in close proximity. He became essential in events such as Messiah Complex and Avengers vs. X-Men before parting ways with the team as he didn't like how the teachers used the students. It was a loss that Cyclops, especially, felt as he loved Prodigy's mind and how he plotted missions out.

Now, it's ironic that T'Challa recruits David here to do the very same thing when N'Jadaka's galactic forces invade Wakanda. David syncs everyone up in the field, with his astral space being a classroom that's basically a psychic channel emitting one language. It's his way of exorcising his dislike for the teachers from Charles' school, while also taking responsibility for the mission and accepting seniority.

He connects teams such as Ironheart's Wild Walk, Miles Morales' Dancing Sword, Misty Knight's Quivering Palm, Storm's Chain Lightning and Black Panther's Meteor Shower, calling all the plays. It also allows him to use outliers such as Luke Cage, War Machine, Nick Fury and Patriot, sending telepathic orders to everyone and even saving other members of the legion in a brilliant comms strategy.

The coordinator role shows how much T'Challa trusts him, and he rewards the leader by also giving the king intel on their opponents when they get in range. It helps the coalition know the weak spots to hit at the exact time, with T'Challa helping direct traffic as the point person. While their enemies figure out that David is serving as a central processing unit and take his base out, he still left an indelible mark on the battlefield.
