Marvel's Black Panther has been nominated for Best Picture in the 91st annual Academy Awards. It's the first supehero film to receive an Oscar nomination in that category.

The coveted recognition follows early awards season buzz, and an unprecedented "For Your Consideration" campaign by Disney and Marvel Studios.

The film, which has earned $1.35 billion worldwide, received seven total nominations, with additional nods for sound editing (Benjamin A. Burtt, Steve Boeddeker), sound mixing, original score (for Ludwig Goransson), costume design (Ruth E. Carter), production design (Hannah Beachler), and original song (“All The Stars” from Black Panther by Kendrick Lamar, SZA).

Sony's Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse was also nominated for Best Animated Feature, while Marvel's Avengers: Infinity War was recognized in the visual effects category.

The Best Picture nomination was anything but certain for Black Panther, which emerged as an Oscar contender early in awards season, but appeared to lose steam in recent weeks. The film was shut out of the Golden Globes, and the Producers Guild Awards.

Even as the Academy Awards nominations were announced this morning at the Samuel Goldwyn Theater in Beverly Hills, California, it appeared as if Black Panther might be relegated to the technical and musical categories, as so many genre films have been in the past. But in the end, the Marvel hit led the nominees in the Best Picture category, followed by BlacKkKlansman, Bohemian Rhapsody, The Favourite, Green Book, Roma, A Star Is Born and Vice.

The winners of the 91st annual Academy Awards will be presented Sunday, Feb. 24, in a ceremony broadcast live on ABC.
