According to an industry insider, a new Black Panther game appears to be in development.Gaming Reporter Jeff Grubb revealed the news during GiantBomb's Game Mess Mornings. Reportedly, the game is still in early development under the working title Project Rainier and developed by the new studio founded by ex-Monolith VP Kevin Stephens and published by EA. It will be an open-world, single-player title that follows the main character as they rise up to take the mantle after the Black Panther has died.RELATED: Midnight Suns Release Date, Trailer, Plot & News to Know

It remains unclear whether the game has any connection with Marvel Studio's Wakanda Forever, which has a similar plot due to the death of Black Panther star Chadwick Boseman. Although it is about the player taking up the title, it isn't clear yet whether the game centers on a known Black Panther character from the comics or a whole new one invented for the game. However, it does seem supported by a previous rumor from June that EA had a Marvel game in early development based on a popular character or team, though it isn't clear this is the same title.

According to Grubb, EA hopes to make the new game into a title with the same depth and success as other major releases, specifically Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order. This marks a new stride for the studio away from everything being a live service, inspired by success with Star Wars Jedi and titles from Stephen's former home at Monolith, which developed games like Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor and its sequel, Shadow of War.

Rumors of the Black Panther game follow a growing trend in Marvel games over the last few years. Sony had tremendous success with its Marvel's Spider-Man, which gets a PC release on Aug. 12 and a sequel in the works. Marvel's Avengers proved less popular with fans and critics, though it's kept itself alive with regular skin releases. One of the most highly-anticipated games of the year also features a famed lineup from the comics giant -- Marvel's Midnight Suns, a turn-based combat RPG, launches in October after numerous delays.

Another wildly-anticipated Marvel title still appears years out from release. Famed Uncharted director Amy Hennig revealed the first project of her new studio, Skydance New Media, is a AAA Marvel game. Neither Hennig nor Marvel revealed many details about the game, though in her statement at the time of the announcement, Hennig referred to it as an "original story."
