Just when you thought Justice League had already suffered every indignity imaginable, from overwhelmingly negative reviews to jokes about bad CGI, Black Panther has delivered another: The Marvel Studios release earned more domestically in its first four days than the Warner Bros.' ensemble film did in its entire domestic run.

Let that sink in for a moment. With its $235 million U.S. debut over the Presidents' Day Weekend, Black Panther crushed a slew of records, unseating 2016's Deadpool from atop its holiday throne, and earning the second-highest bow for a superhero movie, behind only 2012's The Avengers. That's already incredibly impressive, but this Justice League comparison provides a little more context.

At one point envisioned as a turning point for the so-called DC Extended Universe, which had struggled until the release last year of Wonder Woman, Justice League earned just $228 million during its 91 days in North American theaters. Black Panther made more than that in only four.

Comparing three-day opening to three-day opening isn't any more flattering to the Zack Snyder/Joss Whedon film, either: Through Sunday, Ryan Coogler's Black Panther grossed $201.8 million in the domestic market in a month that, only a few years go, wasn't exactly viewed as fertile ground for blockbusters; by contrast, the November-debuting Justice League pulled in $93.8 million.
