Black Panther's Avengers Support Team Battles Monsters In First Mission

WARNING: The following article contains spoilers for Black Panther and the Agents of Wakanda #1 by Jim Zub, Lan Medina, Marcio Menyz and VC's Joe Sabino, on sale Wednesday, Sept. 18.

Being named Chairman of the Avengers can come with a lot of responsibilities, especially when you are already the ruler of an African nation. However, the new duties haven't stopped Black Panther from doing everything in his power to make the entire world a safer place. And with S.H.I.E.L.D. no longer in existence, he's stepped up to form a new secret group to take its place.

The Agents of Wakanda was formed to act as the Avengers' support team. There are some missions that Earth's Mightiest Heroes either can't or shouldn't get involved in. For these special cases, the Agents of Wakanda are activated for intelligence gathering or stealth operations.

Under the supervision of General Okoye, the Wasp (Janet Van Dyne), Gorilla Man, Ka-Zar and more fight together against deadly threats, which is evident in a preview of Black Panther and the Agents of Wakanda #1. Spinning out of the pages of Avengers, the new team-up book takes the Wakandan agents to Pawhuska, Oklahoma. The reason why isn't immediately evident, but for some unknown reason, energy readings are focused on the small town.

The area is mysteriously silent and devoid of people, animals and even wind. When Black Panther peels back an energy shield surrounding the town, they discover the townspeople under siege from a swarm of monstrous creatures.

The part of the town under the shield looks like a warzone, as citizens run in fear and monsters stalk their next prey. The sky is even a shade of purple with crimson lightning bolts in the background. Black Panther sends Wasp out ahead to scout the center of the storm, since she is the quickest and most maneuverable. She's not clear if these are aliens, demons or none of the above, but what she is confident about is someone is directing their movements.

Just as Wasp suggests the Agents of Wakanda add a psychic to the team, she's knocked out of the air, which is where the short preview ends. The last word balloon displays someone mentally saying, "He doesn't love you ---," possibly in a bid to get in Wasp's head by bringing up old memories of a failed relationship.

Marvel Comics has promised Black Panther and the Agents of Wakanda will battle "vampires, aliens, angry fish kings, and more," and this first threat definitely falls in the "weird" category.
