With Namor now officially confirmed to be making his Marvel Cinematic Universe debut in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, Tenoch Huerta has opened up about being cast as the iconic superhero.

Variety asked Huerta what it felt like to wear Namor's speedo for the first time. "It's amazing," the actor said, before explaining how much playing a superhero meant to him. "I mean, everybody pretends to be a superhero or to be part of [these] movies, and then you are part of them, and then you are the superhero, and then you are wearing the costume. And it's your skin, your voice, your range, your talent, your story. I don't know, it's overwhelming." Huerta has been rumored to be playing Namor since June 2021, but his casting was only confirmed when Marvel Studios debuted the first Black Panther: Wakanda Forever trailer at 2022's San Diego Comic-Con.

Created by Bill Everett, Namor McKenzie, or the Sub-Mariner, first appeared in Marvel Comics #1 in 1939 as the King of Atlantis and a mutant. He is known for being one of the first anti-heroes in comic books and has repeatedly fought alongside or against the Avengers, the Fantastic Four, the Defenders, the X-Men and the Illuminati in the pages of Marvel Comics. Although Namor has been featured in several Marvel animated series, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever marks the first time the character has appeared in a live-action project.

Wakanda Forever Synopsis Teases New Conflicts

Black Panther: Wakanda Forever will focus on the leaders of Wakanda — Queen Ramonda (Angela Bassett), Shuri (Letitia Wright), M’Baku (Winston Duke), Okoye (Danai Gurira) and the Dora Milaje — as they fight to protect their nation from intervening world powers in the wake of King T’Challa’s death. "As the Wakandans strive to embrace their next chapter, the heroes must band together with the help of War Dog Nakia (Lupita Nyong’o) and Everett Ross (Martin Freeman) and forge a new path for the kingdom of Wakanda," reads the film's official synopsis. The SDCC trailer suggested that Namor and his fellow Atlanteans could be one of the world powers threatening Wakanda.
