Namor actor Tenoch Huerta has revealed that his character is around 500 years old in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.

While discussing the upcoming sequel to 2018's critically acclaimed Black Panther, newcomer Huerta revealed his character, Namor, is much older than anticipated. Speaking of his 500-year-old character, Huerta said, "It's a guy who is trying to protect his family, to protect his kingdom, his cultural heritage, you know, everything that is the most important thing for him." Huerta added that Namor sets himself on a certain path in the film and makes decisions that the actor hopes others would not make.

Nate Moore, a producer for Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, recently revealed that director Ryan Coogler showed interest in adapting Namor the Sub-Mariner as early as 2018. In the comics, Namor and his kingdom, Atlantis, often clash with Wakanda and Black Panther, so Moore stated Coogler requested that no one else working in the Marvel Cinematic Universe use Namor. "Luckily, nobody was, and he had a great idea for it very early on," Moore said. "So we started building towards that idea, which I think is really fun."

Black Panther's Director Chose Namor Over Doctor Doom

After the success of the first Black Panther film, and as the MCU is building towards Avengers: Secret Wars, many fans have expressed their desire to see Doctor Doom as the villain in the sequel. However, Coogler has revealed he was less interested in including Doom since the villainous character has already been portrayed by several actors in other films. "You didn’t have any baggage of any other actors or any other performances or any other movies, it was just publishing for Namor. I think Doom is a little different. But man, what an incredible character," Coogler said.

In new clips from Wakanda Forever, the titular nation is shown to be flooded with water, pitting Namor's warriors against the Dora Milaje and Winston Duke's M'Baku. While Namor does not show off his abilities in the clips, Coogler has compared his strength to that of Thor and the Hulk. "[There's] no equal in terms of his capabilities, being able to breathe underwater and breathe at high altitudes and walk around on land," Coogler said. "He's incredibly strong, he's as strong as Thor, and if he's around enough water he can be as strong as the Hulk."

Black Panther: Wakanda Forever opens in theaters on Nov. 11.
