The GLAAD Media Awards recognize LGBTQ characters and stories throughout film, television and more. They are awarded to franchises and series that include fair, accurate and inclusive representations of the community across various forms of media. The nominees for the 2019 Awards have been announced, and several superhero properties made a strong showing in the nominations.
Supergirl and Black Lightning have both been nominated for the award for Best Drama Series. This is the first nomination for Black Lightning, which features two lesbian characters as prominent members of the cast: Anissa Pierce (Nafessa Williams) and Grace Choi (Chantal Thuy). Supergirl features lesbian character Alex Danvers (Chyler Leigh) as well as Nia Nal (Nicole Maines), who is transgender.
LGBTQ characters have been a frequent presence with important story arcs within the Arrowverse. The CW is also preparing to premiere Batwoman next season, which will star lesbian superhero Kate Kane (Ruby Rose).
Additionally, Deadpool 2 has been nominated for Outstanding Film. Nominees for Outstanding Comic Book include Batwoman by Marguerite Bennett, K. Perkins, Scott Godlewski, Fernando Blanco, John Rauch, Deron Bennett; Exit Stage Left: The Snagglepuss Chronicles by Mark Russell, Mike Feehan, Mark Morales, Sean Parsons, José Marzan Jr., Paul Mounts, Dave Sharpe; Iceman by Sina Grace, Robert Gill, Nathan Stockman, Ed Tadeo, Rachelle Rosenberg, Federico Blee, Joe Sabino; Lumberjanes: The Infernal Compass, written by Lilah Sturges, Polterink, Jim Campbell; Oh S#!t It's Kim & Kim, written by Magdalene Visaggio, Eva Cabrera, Claudia Aguirre, Zakk Saam; and more.
Other prominent nominees include She-Ra and the Princesses of Power for Outstanding Kids & Family Programming, Wynonna Earp for Best Drama and Brooklyn Nine-Nine for Best Comedy series.
