A familiar threat will make their presence known on Season 2 of Black Lightning with the announcement that Jordan Calloway's Khalil Payne will return as the DC Comics villain Painkiller.
The reveal of Calloway's promotion to series regular on the sophomore season of The CW hit show was made by showrunner/executive producer Salim Akil during the Black Lightning panel at Comic-Con International in San Diego on Saturday.
Khalil Payne was a promising track star and student at Freeland High School -- where Black Lightning (Cress Williams) is the Principal -- before he suffered a gunshot wound to his spine. Unable to walk, Khalil became embittered until Black Lightning’s archnemesis Tobias Whale (Marvin “Krondon” Jones III) offered him the chance to walk again through cybernetic enhancements.
Now under loyalty to Tobias Whale, Khalil is transformed into Painkiller, meta-strong and the power to generate a paralyzing agent from his body that is distributed through darts. With a new lease on life, Painkiller begins to reminisce on his previous life and romance with Black Lightning's daughter, Jennifer Pierce (China Anne McClain).
“I’m thrilled to have Jordan upped as a series regular," Akil told the fans in attendance. "He was a great asset to our show in the role of Khalil/Painkiller during season one, and now that he has evolved into Painkiller, I can’t wait for you all to see him in season two.”
Returning to The CW in October, Black Lightning was developed by Salim Akil and stars Cress Williams as Jefferson Pierce/Black Lightning, China Anne McClain as Jennifer Pierce, Nafessa Williams as Anissa Pierce/Thunder, Christine Adams as Lynn Stewart, Marvin “Krondon” Jones III as Tobias Whale, Damon Gupton as Billy Henderson and James Remar as Peter Gambi.
