In the DC Universe, there is no one version of Death, but he most famous form is Death of the Endless. Usually appearing to people as a young, pale, goth girl, this version of Death came into being shortly after the first living thing in the universe was born. She is the second oldest of The Endless, following closely behind her brother Destiny and followed by her younger brother Dream. The second version of Death in the DC Universe is the Black Racer. Wearing the armor of a medieval knight and traveling on skis, this is what the New Gods see when Death comes for them.

And then there is a third form that Death takes on, specifically for the speedsters of the DC Universe. This form resembles the most iconic speedster in comics, Flash, but is dressed all in black with a red lightning bolt insignia. In the place of a human face is a skull. This version of death is known to the fastest men and women alive as the Black Flash.

Black Flash takes Flash into the Speed Force

First appearing in 1998's The Flash volume 2 #139 by Mark Millar, Pop Mhan and Chris Ivy, the Black Flash shows no mercy when it comes to taking the souls of speedsters. When their time is up, the Black Flash will track them across time and space, pulling them into the Speed Force where their powers originated.

This cosmic being was first discovered by Max Mercury when he realized that the final photo of Golden Age hero Johnny Quick had a black blur behind him. When the same black blur appeared on a photo of the then Flash Wally West, the speedsters worked to keep their leader safe and believed that they had defeated the Black Flash when Wally brought the being to the end of all time and space, but it returned when Bart Allen, the fourth Flash (better known as Impulse), was killed by his rival Inertia and the Rogues.

The Black Flash laid dormant for years until Barry Allen, the second and most famous Flash, returned from the dead. Barry found the dead husk of the Black Flash and in turn became the new Black Flash for a brief period. After breaking free of his new position as the embodiment of Death for speedsters, Barry resumed his career as Flash. Most recently, the Black Flash was seen hunting down users of the Sage, Still and Strength Forces in order to protect the Speed Force from collapsing. Barry teamed up with Hunter Zolomon - better known as Zoom, the second Reverse-Flash - to trap the Black Flash in the Forever Force, a mission that cost Hunter his life.

Black Flash Arrowverse CW shows

The Black Flash has also made it's way to TV, appearing on The Flash and other shows connected to the Arrowverse. This version of the Black Flash was created by the Time Wraiths, who are tasked with keeping the timeline of the Multiverse intact - a job made nearly impossible when Flash and other speedsters kept messing with the timeline. When Hunter Zolomon became Zoom and began to kill Flashes from other Earths, the Time Wraiths hunted him down and turned him into the Black Flash, a Time Wraith specifically designed to track down and kill any speedsters who sought to change the past.

While the Black Flash is usually depicted as a villain, in truth it is a being that, like Death of the Endless and the Black Racer, exists only to ensure that the natural course of life and death is followed. Of course, when speedsters are involved, the natural course of things is rarely ever followed.
