Yami’s probably the most notable character in Black Clover that isn’t one of the protagonists. Everything about him exudes the aura of a shonen protagonist, from his incredible power and belief that surpassing one’s own limits is something they can simply “do” to the fact that he does whatever he wants with little regard to what’s considered acceptable for a person in his position.
Yami’s incredible power makes the Black Bulls a formidable organization within the Magic Knights, and he’s cultivated a team of some of the Clover Kingdom’s most useful mages, all while doing everything the way he wants to.
10 From Another Country
Born to a family of fishermen, Yami was originally from a completely different country than Clover Kingdom. While he was out fishing, he was carried all the way to the land of Clover Kingdom where he was originally an outcast because of his weird manner of speaking and the fact that he wasn’t like the people who were living there. This made it difficult for him to find acceptance thanks to the immense mistrust they had for someone that was so different than the culture they were used to.
9 Recruited By The Wizard King
Initially, Yami was brought into the Magic Knight army by Julius himself. Yami was much younger at the time and didn’t even speak the same language, which lead to Julius deciding to help him learn how to speak the country’s language while also giving him a job. As Julius gained more power, he eventually gave Yami a place to create a guild of his own, making him into a captain of his own group.

Most of the Magic Knight guilds have specific rules to them, guiding how they pick people. This maintains a specific culture within their organization, and that culture is a reflection of the person running the group themselves. Yami is an exception to this, and he is in fact someone who only picks the people he likes—eclectic people who might not always get along but have their own talents making them worthy of working as a Magic Knight.

Let’s get this out of the way. Yami is Christopher Sabat in English, one of the most legendary English voice actors of all time. Yami is voiced by Vegeta, which is kind of weird considering he loses all the time and Yami never seems to lose.
His Japanese voice actor is Junichi Suwabe, who’s played Shota Aizawa in My Hero Academia, Dandy in Space Dandy, and more. There's no way this character wasn't going to be legendary.
6 A Fellow Magic Knight Had A Crush On Him
Yami doesn’t have a girlfriend, but he does have someone walking around with a rather huge crush on him. Charlotte Roselei of the Blue Rose is deeply in love with Yami. Charlotte was cursed by a woman who would trap her entire family in a cage unless she was able to fall in love. Yami broke the cage, urging her to go to her friends for help, and, in doing so, caused Charlotte to love him, breaking the curse.
5 Father Of His Squad
It’s a lot of tough love from him, but Yami is absolutely the father of his squad. The Black Bulls aren’t just a Magic Knight organization, and Yami helps all of them work through their problem in his own way. Just having them together allows the group to have a support system that allows them to overcome all the challenges that are frequently brought their way. This also explains why he has high-level magicians cleaning and doing chores like feeding pets and taking care of their base.
4 Continually Growing Stronger
One of the strangest things about Yami is that he’s continuing to learn more powerful spells. It’s explained that, after a certain age, a Magic Knight's grimoire won’t gain any more spells, with the mage having reached the end of their growth. But, Yami outright denies this, and, in fact, he learns a new spell just in time to beat Third Eye member Vetto, who’d decided to explore on them. This power allows him to break past his own limits.
3 A Special Power
Something Yami has that few other mages in the Black Clover universe has power over his ki. Ki in this universe is completely different from magic.
Ki gives Yami the ability to fight at a higher level by feeling the attack and the ability of his opponent, allowing him to react faster and even outdo people who are technically faster or stronger than him. Yami taught his power of ki to the newest black bull, who immediately took to it.
2 One Of The Most Popular Characters
Unsurprisingly, Yami is a very popular character. In the weekly shonen jump popularity polls, Yami got second place amongst all the other Black Clover characters in the first, second, and third popularity polls. But, even in Viz, he managed to rank first in the first two polls in the series.
This isn’t really a surprise, as Yami is a laid back guy who cares about his teammates, making it difficult to actually root against him. He’s about as admirable as it gets.
1 One Of The Most Powerful Magic Knights
It’s not talked about often, but Yami is easily one of the strongest mages in the series. His ability as a swordsman aside, his dark magic is incredible, allowing him to do things few people are capable of. When we see him picture how powerful he is, he talks about being drastically above even nobles in terms of pure mana power. Since then, though, he’s only grown even more powerful, so it remains to be seen whether anyone else is ahead of him anymore.
