Black Clover: Sword of the Wizard King, the official film based on the eponymous anime, finally has a release date.

As reported by Anime News Network, Black Clover's anime film will drop exclusively on Netflix on the same day as its premiere date in Japanese theaters. Announced in March 2021, the upcoming film will air on the same date viewers last saw a new episode from Black Clover two years ago. At the same time, Netflix dropped an exciting teaser trailer for the film.

While the trailer doesn't give away any key plot details, it shows viewers Asta's sheer motivation. In addition to the trailer, Black Clover announced a new character will appear in the upcoming film. Toshihiko Seki, best known for voicing Iruka in the Naruto franchise, will voice Konrath, a former Wizard King. Production crew set to return for the upcoming film include Ayataka Tanemura as the director, Itsuko Takeda as the character designer and Minako Seki as the composer.

The release date of the Black Clover film differs from the usual practice of anime films. Typically, anime fans are unable to watch Japanese releases until months after their initial release date. For example, One Piece Film: Red premiered in Japan on Aug. 6, 2022. However, Western audiences cannot watch the film until it hits theaters on Nov. 3.

What Is Black Clover?

Yūki Tabata's Black Clover manga series has been serialized in Weekly Shōnen Jump since February 2015. The manga went on hiatus in April 2022 for Tabata to work on the final arc, but resumed in Aug. 2022. As of May 2021, over 15 million copies of Black Clover are in circulation. Initially adapted into an original video animation, Pierrot produced an anime adaptation on TV Tokyo from Oct. 2017, to March 2021.

Black Clover follows a young orphan named Asta, who lives in a world filled with magical beings. However, Asta possesses no magical abilities and must rely on his physical strength. Despite not being able to perform magic, Asta is determined to become the next Wizard King. Asta, along with a fellow orphan named Yuno, develop a rivalry and join a Magic Knight squad to fulfil their ambitious dreams.

Black Clover: Sword of the Wizard King will premiere worldwide on Netflix on March 31, 2023, and open in Japanese theaters on the same day. The original anime series is available to stream on Crunchyroll.
