In Black Clover, Asta has the pleasure of encountering foe after foe. As they increase in difficulty, Asta's levels - skills and techniques - increase as well. The one constant that never wavers is Asta's will to never give up. Some may even say that's his real magic power.
Against all odds and injured beyond repair, Asta stands back up again and again when knocked down. His drive to become the next Wizard King and his envy at other's magic gives him the extra push he needs to succeed. However, those impossible odds should stay just that. 10 Sister Lily
This is a battle of the heart! Sister Lily is Asta's first love. He's asked her to marry him since she first set foot in the church of Hage village. Sister Lily defends herself when flustered, which results in Asta receiving a taste of her magic. She tells him she's everyone's sister, so marrying anyone is out of the question.
As if that would stop Asta. This only hypes him up more and makes his fantasies run wild. With his stubborn trait of never giving up, Asta believes that once he attains the title of Wizard King that she'll surely accept his proposal. Even with his tenacity, this fight is one he may lose.
9 Revchi Salik
Revchi is a former Magic Knight of the Purple Orca squad. He's a malicious opponent that sets out to steal Yuno's four-leafed grimoire after the grimoire reception. Upon finding Yuno chained up by Revchi, Asta joins in the foray. Even with no magic, he rushes in headfirst. Not the wisest of decisions, but if he hopes to become the next Wizard King, then he needs to do at least this much.
Beat up and wrapped in chains, we witness Asta question what he can actually do without magic. He's close to giving in to defeat but perks up with Yuno's encouragement. Of course, this is the first battle of the anime, so it won't be the end. When it's down to the wire, Asta's power to never give up is what grants him the anti-magic sword and five-leafed grimoire.
8 Sally
Sally is a member of the Eye of the Midnight Sun. She's obsessed with conducting scientific experiments, and she's got her eyes set on Asta. Sally has attempted to capture Asta a few times during the series, to no avail. As much as Sally is an opponent, she's not one that wishes to fight.
When heading towards the castle of Clover Kingdom, Asta encounters her once more, but this time he offers himself up in return for her help. It's here that we see his magic of persuasion as he refuses to back off. He won't give in unless she helps, and she does but only after he wears her down. They negotiate the stipulations, so instead of fighting each other, they'll fight to protect their kingdom.
7 Vetto
The battle against Vetto is a defining one for the whole Black Bull Magic Knight squad. As per captain Yami's instructions, each member surpasses their limits, but even that isn't enough to drown out Vetto's demands of despair. Asta is the one to drown out those demands with his declarations of "not yet, I'm not done."
This is all well and good, but Asta's arm is broken. His strength is sapped. His fellow magic knights are either defeated, on the brink of passing out, or out of magic power. Even Vetto is amazed at Asta's passion. It's because of his power to never give up that Asta overcomes the odds and plays a vital role in defeating this monstrous opponent.
6 Yagos
When forces from the Diamond Kingdom attack the city of Kiten, Golden Dawn and members of the Black Bulls arrive to fend them off. This fight occurs immediately after Asta and the Black Bulls return from their battle against Vetto. Meaning, Asta's arms are broke and cursed.
During this time, Finral and his brother Langris meet. This results in Langris insulting Finral, which prompts Asta into action. Because even with cursed, broken arms, every member is a vital and valued magic knight. We'd expect Asta to chill and let the others handle Yagos, but no. Asta accepts the challenge and shows everyone just how important and skillful his teammates are. After all, Asta's not going to back down, even if he can't use his arms.
5 Witch Queen
The Witch Queen is touted as the mother of witches. She possesses blood manipulation and fortune-telling magic. This allows her to make near accurate predictions of the future. When Asta's arm is cursed during his fight with Vetto, she's the only one capable of healing the damage. Although she heals him, her motives are more than sinister in nature.
After taking down members of the Eye of the Midnight Sun for her, Asta is caught in the Queen's trap. She utilizes her blood manipulation to unleash his demonic power and makes him her puppet. With the help of Vanessa's ability to control fate, and Asta's formidable willpower to never give up, they break the puppeteer's hold. Knowing she's lost, the Witch Queen claims defeat.
4 Fana
Asta faces off against Fana and the fire spirit, Salamander. The flames burn hotter than he can tolerate, but nonetheless he pushes forward. It's his dominate will that allows him to manifest the strength needed to assail this fire mage. Asta defeats her once, but she transforms with the help of demonic mana.
He's nearly run into the ground at this point, but Asta refuses to give up on Fana. He'll take her down and return her to normal even if it costs him his life. We'd caution Asta to retreat, but that would be as bad as silently accepting defeat without a fight.
3 The Devil
In the battle against Ladros, Asta is severely injured to the point of losing consciousness. He's knocked out of one battle and into another as he meets the devil associated with his five-leafed grimoire. This devil taunts him with the promise of power in exchange for handing over his body. As if Asta would allow that!
Thank you very much, but Asta would rather take control of the devil's power while maintaining a firm hold on his body. It's a bittersweet offer that Asta has no intention of accepting. Asta's dominant willpower results in the form of Black Asta, which is the channeling of the demonic power, which allows him to fight on par with Ladros.
2 Ladros
In the Witch's Forest, the Diamond Kingdom's forces attack with Ladros at the forefront. This fire mage picks a battle with Mars, but Asta intervenes in the name of friendship. Thus begins the fight. During this time, Ladros tells Asta to give up, but he's not about to lie down and take it.
Asta is knocked down and loses consciousness for a span of time. This is where he confronts the devil that hopes to take over his body in exchange for power. It's through Asta's sheer will and tenacity that he imbues a new form of power and defeats Ladros. It isn't until Ladros resembles a hollowed-out husk that he cedes defeat.
1 Patolli
Asta has fought against Patolli more than once. Their battles get interrupted, but the final showdown occurs when the devil Zagred turns Patolli into a dark elf to fend off Asta and Yuno. Even before Asta had control over his demonic powers, he challenged Patolli, although he had no hopes of winning.
It's that adamant streak of his that pushes him forward. In the final round, Asta ends up knocking Patolli down, but must also rid him of the devil's influence. It's here that Asta's willpower is tested against the demonic pull that dwells in the unconscious.
