The Black Bulls are the most well-known organization for the Magic Knights in Black Clover's Clover Kingdom. They’re home to the main characters, and as such they get more development than any other group in the series. They’re a likable cast of misfits, but they’re not all perfect.
Thanks to the first half of the series not trying to develop most of these characters, it took a while for many of them to catch on. Instead, they were rather frustrating one-note jokes. Of course, some of them were cool the entire time, either because the creator had more plans for them or they were just cool archetypes.
10 GAUCHE
Gauche is barely a character, he’s just a guy who constantly talks about his creepy obsession with his sister. His backstory is interesting enough, as a character who had to do everything to protect his little sister, but he’s so incredibly one-note for most of the series.
Though the character eventually develops into being slightly more interesting, it’s frustrating to have him on screen most of the time, and you’d almost always wish someone else were there instead.
9 GREY
Like Gauche, Grey’s gimmick overrides who she is as a character. The basic idea is fascinating—a shapeshifter so uncomfortable with her appearance that she’s constantly resembling someone else instead. But most of the time she’s so busy trying to avoid anyone looking at her rather than interacting. She’s got some great character moments but
8 ZORA
Introduced during the Royal Knights Exam, Zora Ideale disguised himself as Xerx Lugner to get in and work alongside Asta and Mimosa in the tournament. Zora can be cool when he’s flippant to the authority in the Magic Knight world, but that’s not who he spends most of his time around.
Usually, he’s just being a jerk to anyone who he meets, and he spends so much time pulling pranks on literally anyone who will let it happen. He clearly cares about his allies, and if he were more direct about how he worked he’d be much cooler.
7 LUCK
Another one-note character, when Luck first appears he’s constantly looking for a fight with anyone and everyone. His biggest problem is that he can’t hold himself back, and constantly tries to win fights without working with his teammates. As a result, he causes more problems for everyone involved. Like Zora, Luck also has a terrible habit of trying to play as many pranks on his teammates as possible. But unlike Zora, there’s an earnestness to the character that makes him far more likable.
6 MAGNA
Magna’s the first character on this list that’s an actual character. Rather than just being one-note and constantly pushing for the same joke, people can understand him. He’s a loyal guy who believes in his friends and looks out for everyone in the Black Bulls. He shows perhaps the most respect to Captain Yami out of anyone in the group, and he’s the perfect underdog thanks to his weaker abilities compared to everyone else.
5 ASTA
Earlier in the series, Asta would’ve landed at the bottom of this list. The first episode voice acting is some of the worst in anime history, with his voice being impossibly shrill and making it difficult to get into the series.
The constant yelling made this series difficult to like early on, but as the voice actor got used to the role things got much better. He’s not quite cool yet, and there’s a ton to make up for compared to what happened early on in the show.
4 FINRAL
Finral is the character everyone feels for the most. While everyone else is some version of crazy, Finral is the one sane person in the entire group. He just wants to do his job and go home, preferably dating pretty women when he gets paid. His backstory explains why he’s so girl-crazy, and in general he’s just such a supportive person it’s hard not to love him. He’s not the coolest character in their guild, but he’s certainly the most likable.
3 VANESSA
It’s impossible not to like Vanessa. She’s got a simple philosophy: get drunk, lie around her place in as little clothing as possible. Still, when it comes time to go to bat for the team she’s never had any problems doing so. She was even willing to go back and confront her mother, all to help her team. She’s also got an adorable cat that can control the fate itself, which has saved the entire team several times over at this point.
2 NOELLE SILVA
Noelle is almost as much the main character as Asta. The series is about Asta’s rivalry with his childhood friend, and whether Noelle can surpass her mother and gain control over her powers. We’ve watched her grow from an arrogant person who had no confidence in their own abilities, into someone who wants to do what’s right and is constantly becoming stronger, surpassing her older self.
1 YAMI
Yami is essentially the shonen protagonist grown up and in someone else’s series. Certainly, there were a ton of stories about him gradually figuring it all out until he got his own guild, and now he’s watching after the next generation of idiot shonen boys. He epitomizes cool, approaching everything with a laidback attitude and a belief in his people and their abilities.
