Black Canary has a long comics history that started in 1947. The mantle has been taken up by two individuals over time: Dinah Drake was the first Black Canary and her daughter, Dinah Laurel Lance, took up the title after Crisis on Infinite Earths. Mother and daughter share the superpower of the "canary-cry," a sonic scream that can shatter objects and kill assailants. In addition to the scream, both women are trained in advanced martial arts.

Both versions of Black Canary have been adapted in other forms of media. Both appeared on the CW's Arrow as well as in the DC animated universe. Dinah Lance recently made her feature film debut in Birds of Prey.

Otto Schmidt is a comic book artist and writer based in Cyprus. He has worked on titles for both Marvel and DC. In recent years, he has worked on selected issues of DC's 2016 Green Arrow as both an artist and a cover artist. Schmidt is presently a penciler on Marvel's Hawkeye: Freefall.
